Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Tuesday credited Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) for making "the right decision" with her veto of the so-called "birther bill," which would have required presidential candidates to submit their birth certificates in order to qualify for the ballot.

Legislation like this has been offered in a number of state legislatures across the country, driven by persistent speculation in some quarters that President Obama was not born in Hawaii. No similar law had gotten as far as a governor's desk, however.
McCain, Obama's 2008 Republican rival, said in a message posted to Twitter Tuesday afternoon that he was "proud" of Brewer "for her veto of the 'birther bill' - it was the right decision."

The Palin Patrol will tell you that she owed it to McCain. I think it would have been a great way to separate herself from McRINO had she sat out the primary. She didn’t even need to campaign for anybody, but she chose her side.

Getting official copies of a lot of these documents can take time in a situation when there is an obvious time limit. If a single official or a handful of officials with their own agenda can gum up the works, then the bill might be used against a valid Republican candidacy as an invalid Democrat candidacy. I had to go through a similar rigamarole when I first applied for a passport. If my parents weren’t around to sign an affidavit, I’m not sure what I could have done, because in their case, the US government never gave them a naturalization certificate to fill out. Now if Brewer vetoed simply because it was a bad law instead of just ideology or McCain variety political calculations, then perhaps she needed to make more specific legal objections to the legislature. But short laws can be abused just like 100 page laws. Whether McCain has Svengali-like powers over Brewer is beside the point.

Agreed, but baptismal and circumcision records is a tad extreme and pointless. These aren't going to prove eligibility for the presidency, especially since they are not official documents.

Seems like a fair and well written bill.
If the "guidelines" are followed I don't see where it gives undue power to a secretary of state, a county recorder or a city clerk.

This gal’s reading comprehension is below 3rd grade. Or she’s just blatantly lying. This bill would have allowed any legal resident to challenge the eligibility decision made by what is currently - and will remain so because of Brewer’s veto - the “sole gatekeeper”.
She is saying the exact opposite of the truth.
That’s why there has to be a process to hold the “gatekeeper” legally accountable. This bill would have allowed any legal resident to challenge the SOS’ decision - effectively taking it out of the SOS’ control and putting it in the hands of the court, which is responsible to adhere to the law and to evidentiary standards.
