White House releases trusted Internet ID plan

The U.S. government will coordinate private-sector efforts to create trusted identification systems for the Internet, with the goal of giving consumers and businesses multiple options for authenticating identity online, according to a plan released by President Barack Obama's administration.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will work with private companies to drive development and adoption of trusted ID technologies, White House officials said. The National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC), released by the Department of Commerce on Friday, aims to protect the privacy and security of Internet users by encouraging a broad online authentication market in the U.S.

"The fact is that the old password and username combination we often use to verify people is no longer good enough," Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said at an NSTIC release event hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. "It leaves too many consumers, government agencies and businesses vulnerable to ID and data theft."...

The trusted ID technologies described in NSTIC would allow online users to dump passwords in favor of credentials that can be used on multiple websites. The Obama administration hopes that multiple trusted ID technologies will emerge, officials said.

Consumer participation in trusted ID technologies will be voluntary, they added.

NIST will host three workshops starting in June to focus on problems with development and adoption of online ID authentication technologies, Obama administration officials said...

I just bet it'll be voluntary.

A "credential" system offers an even more enticing target. Once broken, and these things are always broken, it'll be like having a master key and make ID theft even easier.

Why is government involved? There's already OpenID, used by Google, Yahoo, Facebook and others, if sites are interested in centralized log in services.

A link to the NSTIC proposal.

*Cough*Wikileaks*Cough*

Even if this were Constitutional, the federal government can't keep anything secure, safe, or confidential. You'd have better security if you posted all your passwords on the front page of every newspaper instead.

There has to be a more secretly ulterior motive behind this.

Obama doesn’t do anything without ulterior motives.

Fact is, I don’t trust this government, and never will...The old adage if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. What’s broke that the government has to “fix it.?”

Yes, if you don't want to participate you can voluntarily refrain from using the internet or email. At the same time, you will be required to use the internet to file tax returns, access your bank account, or access services. So if you don't want to voluntarily cooperate, to prison on tax charges. But that will be your voluntary choice.

The following RINOs will vote in favor of this bill: every member of the Congress who voted against the budget bill that failed after the Dims voted present. Clearly, that bill was intended to fool us and GOP had no intention of passing the bill. When the Dims voted present, GOP panicked because the bill was about to pass. So many of them changed their votes to No and felled the bill. Expect them to support the control of the internet to protect us from terrorists and also because it will be “voluntary.”

Saying so others don’t have to: What do you have to hide? And if you have nothing to hide, why do you worry about government knowing what you buy, what email messages you send, what you read and what pages you visit? Why don’t you want the chilrun to be safe? Why do you want Bin Laden to win?

Exactly. This is just another government power play.
