Libyan Rebels Say They’re Being Sent Weapons

BENGHAZI, Libya — Libyan rebels say they have begun receiving arms shipments from abroad, although there has been no independent confirmation of that.

The rebel military leader, Gen. Abdel Fattah Younes, on Saturday said in an interview with Al Arabiya, a satellite news channel, that his forces had already received weapons supplies from unnamed nations that support their uprising.

A spokesman for the rebels’ National Transitional Council, Mustafa Gheriani, confirmed General Younes’s statement but also refused to provide details.

Asked whether any arms shipments had arrived yet, a spokesman for the rebel military, Col. Ahmed Bani, smiled broadly, but then insisted, “I didn’t quite confirm it.”

On April 14, however, the emir of Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, told CNN that his country would provide weapons to the rebels and that deliveries of antitank weapons may already have reached them. Qatar, along with Italy and France, has already recognized the rebels as the legitimate government of Libya.

Qatar hosted an international conference on Libya last week in which participants called for the ouster of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi and his family from power in Libya. Afterwards, the Italian foreign minister, Franco Frattini, said arms shipments to the rebels would be justified, but he stopped short of confirming whether Italy would make such shipments.

How does something like this happen?

Without a leader?

Interesting.

The emir of Qatar is the only Arab leader to recognise the interim national council in Benghazi.

"Pretty influential guy," Obama said of Emir Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, noting that he basically owns the Al Jazeera television network. "He is a big booster, big promoter of democracy all throughout the Middle East. Reform, reform, reform -- you're seeing it on Al Jazeera."

Isn’t there some kind of UN mandate that prohibits such arms trafficking?

Somebody better report this to the UN.

Since there are no good guys in this fight, arm them to get as many as possible (on both sides) killed.

Actually they are consulting with their European sponsors over what the new Libyan Constitution should say.

Libya's opposition dispatched legal experts to France - ‎April 15, 2011‎ - Legal specialists from Libya's opposition movement are visiting Paris to get advice about how to write a new constitution and build state institutions....

Kosovo's constitution was written by the EU and like France, Kosovo has banned the headscarf in public schools.

"Actually they are consulting with their European sponsors over what the new Libyan Constitution should say."

FWIW, they might want to think about a very explicit natural born citizen clause for their chief executive.

It seems that you have limited understanding of Kosovo. Headscarfs are imported by Saudis. It is not Kosovo Albanian tradition. Headcover was banned in 1945 and generations grew up without them.

On other hand, Kosovo Albanian "government" is filled with terrorists and human organ traffickers and EU is perfectly OK with that.

Similar profile of "government"will emerge in "Cyrenaica"

What starts as criminal activity can not become legal.

It's no surprise to me that headscarves were banned by the communists. The question is why Kosovo would ban them today while sharia law is allegedly on the rise there.

Tell me, does Serbia ban headscarves in public schools like France and Kosovo do?

Does Serbia have a burqa ban like France does? Does Russia have a burqa ban?

It sure is a real shame that NATO could not do for Kosovo what Vladimir Putin did for Chechnya. While girls in Kosovo are not even allowed to voluntarily wear the headscarf in school, Chechen women are now required to wear headscarves or face punishment.

Where is the largest mosque in all of Europe? Is it in Kosovo, or in Russia?

It is like asking does Serbia have law banning polar bear hunt. No need for the law because there are no polar bears in Serbia. There are few rabid islamists to warrant establishing special laws for them, like France had to do.

Islamists are in Kosovo, but not Serbia? Is Kosovo then not Serbia?

Would a Serb or Russian occupied Kosovo not resemble what Putin has achieved in Chechnya? After all, the Chechens also lived under communism, but now thanks to Putin they are returning to sharia law. Why is Kosovo different?

The common thread between Chechnya and Kosovo is that both are ruled by gangsters. They are not terrorist states but organized crime states.
