House lawmakers defeated a proposal by conservative Republicans to make deeper cuts to spending and tax rates than those proposed in the Republican budget, but only after last-minute maneuvering by Democrats on the House floor.
In a chaotic scene filled with shouting more typical of that which takes place in the British Parliament, the Republican Study Committee's (RSC) alternative to Rep. Paul Ryan's (R-Wis.) 2012 budget went down in a 119-136 vote.
It was gaveled shut only after Democratic leaders started pushing members to switch their "no" votes to "present," in order to force a face-off between conservatives and the Republican leadership. A total of 176 lawmakers voted "present."
House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said on Twitter:
Dems voting present on RSC budget to highlight GOP divisions, plans to end Medicare - which bdgt does GOP support? Ryan or Ryan on steroids? Hoyer and Ryan could both be observed yelling on the House floor, with Hoyer shouting to his members to vote present and Ryan shouting for the vote to be gaveled closed.
Members of the Republican leadership flipped their votes in the closing moments of the proposal to help fell the proposal. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) switched her vote from yes to no at the last minute, as did Rep. David Dreier (R-Calif.), the chairman of the House Rules Committee.
There was last-minute drama in the vote over the conservative proposal, as a number of liberal Democrats flipped their votes from "no" to "present." Lawmakers loudly protested as Republicans tried to gavel the vote shut before more votes could be switched.
I'm not a third party type by any means -- but I am looking for a Second Party ... this country could use a real Opposition Party.
2012 will be a real wake up call for Republicans and Democrats when the Tea Party takes over the Republican party. They (Boehner and company) just don’t get it.
Watching these “Keystone Cop” Republicans is just pitiful to watch. I’ll change that to it’s painful to watch. It is time to get rid of Boehner and get some real leadership in there. This just can’t go on like this. The Repubs are making total jackasses out of themselves.
“I’m not a third party type by any means — but I am looking for a Second Party ... this country could use a real Opposition Party.”
Agree. A third party just splits the vote. I just want Republicans to be relentless and without shame for once- just as the Dems always are in pushing ahead with their agenda.
TIA.
“2012 will be a real wake up call for Republicans and Democrats when the Tea Party takes over the Republican party. They (Boehner and company) just dont get it.”
Yep. People didn’t devote all their time and energy for this timid, unprincipled nonsense.
2010 was just step one; 2012 will be a hurricane.
OK....now I am confused...what just happened, and over what????
But I can imagine Mitt Romney being the nominee. And I can imagine Donald Trump running as an Independent. At that point, I would definitely like the idea of Sarah Palin running as an Independent.
Imagine the Democrat guy (Obama) winning the election with 28% of the vote, and the three Republicans each getting 24% of the vote.
Wouldn't that tell the story of the Stupid party?
Ah, another principled vote in Congress.
Get rid of all RINOS, establishment Republicans, elitist Republicans, and Democrats, and then, successfully, replace them all with true and decent conservatives. This will, always, be the definitive answer.
Taking the party back one RINO hide at a time. Now it’s time for the RINO’s to STFU and let some conservatives lead. They can’t count on their Dimmy buddies for cover any more.
“OK....now I am confused...what just happened, and over what????”
Me too, I don’t understand either.
Mark Levin pointed out yesterday that as despicable a human being as someone like Chuckie Schumer is, he will never apologize nor will he ever say to his liberal flock, something like, “Well, this is the best we could get”. He, and his leftist cohorts, just keep coming back, and back and back... until they get what they want.
The GOP is so afraid of being accused of being “heartless”, and they are so afraid of being criticized by the Washington Post and the NY Times that they’ve lost their ability to put through any meaningful conservative legislation.
Me three.
It’s always a ray of sunshine to know that my (Colorado) congressman, Doug Lamborn, can always be relied on to vote as a principled conservative, regardless of what the RINOs do.
bingo- they fight like little girls and have since 2005....in fact little girls put up a better fight....
they out to start treating the rats like the rats treat them- and when they are criticized for it they should then FORCIBLY point out the hypocrisy....but they won’t...
These fools can do whatever they want ... the economic realities will ultimately prevail (and then they can stand in a circle pointing their stubby little fingers — or whatever — at each other in an attempt to affix blame).
Federal Spending causes inflation.
There, I just gave them their election campaign.
