President Barack Obama has admitted he put politics before his country when he voted as a freshman senator against allowing the US government to borrow more money.
Now, as he seeks as president to persuade Congress to raise the US debt ceiling by next month, Obama is having to explain away that vote in 2006.
"I think that it's important to understand the vantage point of a senator versus the vantage point of a... president," Obama said in an exclusive interview with ABC News.
"When you're a senator, traditionally what's happened is this is always a lousy vote. Nobody likes to be tagged as having increased the debt limit for the United States by a trillion dollars," Obama said.
"As president, you start realizing, 'You know what? We can't play around with this stuff. This is the full faith in credit of the United States.'
"That was just an example of a new senator, you know, making what is a political vote as opposed to doing what was important for the country. And I'm the first one to acknowledge it."
The White House warned this week of a financial "Armageddon" if Congress refuses to raise the $14.29 trillion debt limit.
Lawmakers must take action by May 16 or see the United States default on interest payments on its debt.

politics? WHAT politics? and was this basically one more of his “PRESENT” votes when he couldn’t get what he (or his handlers) wanted?
“As president, you start realizing, ‘You know what? We can’t play around with this stuff. This is the full faith in credit of the United States.’
The fact that he admits he wasn’t concerned about his vote, except in a political way, while he was a Senator is all anyone should need to know about him.
Exactly, plus President barack hussein obama jr.. hated any thing that would of helped President Bush, I think also led to his vote against it..
Just once, if a reporter could show they had half a brain, and a pair of nads to ask a legitimate question.
Just more doubletalk BS from 0.
This is more, 'Don't pay attention to what I did, just believe what I'm saying.' cr@p that politicians excel at dishing.
0 is also trying to weave in the impression that he is superior to congress and above the fray -- the adult talking to the children, telling the world that his perspective is much more sophisticated, and that anyone who disagrees with him now is only putting their politics ahead of the nation.
Has 0 trotted off for another round of golf yet? Or to go 'coach' his kids' teams? Things seem to go better when he's gone.
Golly gee, Wow. Did his speech writer spend an evening over beers with an old frat buddy?
Bump.
So according to the ex-senator; senators are mindless idiots, but once they become presidents they become sober, thoughtful morons who don't realize they're still mindless idiots.
Exactly right. Well put.
Bravo.
“’You know what? We can’t play around with this stuff. This is the full faith in credit of the United States.’”
Really...that speech writer must have stayed up all night coming up with that answer...and what does “full faith in credit” even mean?
Is he talking about the ‘line of credit’ he’s been using since he’s been playing around?
There is no crisis.
Take the revenues, and pay your interest cost.
Pay the folks on Social Security.
Force the Democrats to decide how to split up the remainder
He’s learning on the job.
Yes, so, in other words, when he was a Senator, he was inexperienced ...
Yet, we elected him — an inexperienced senator — into office.
Perfect.
“Yet, we elected him an inexperienced senator into office.”
“”That was just an example of a new senator, you know, making what is a political vote as opposed to doing what was important for the country. And I’m the first one to acknowledge it.”
When we read his memoirs (assuming he, not Bill Ayers, writes them), he will undoubtedly take a new tack, acknowledging that as a new president, everything he did was political, as opposed to doing what was important (or right) for the country. He’ll graciously claim to be the first one to acknowledge it. Too late, Bozo. Some of us have been onto you since Day One in office. You have no credibility and BTW, your tax-borrow-and-spend policies suck.
This is like the alcoholic “confessing” that he fell off the wagon, but pleading that he now can be trusted. Basically, Obama has admitted to being a big fat liar in the past.
Mr. President, if you were so cynical and political (not to mention duplicitous) back then, why should we believe you’ve changed your stripes now?
Let's give this jerk the benefit of the doubt for a minute and assume he was sincere as a Senator.
So he was unaware of the full gravity of things as a Senator. This sounds like his shifting positions on Gitmo, renditions, drone strikes, staying the course in Iraq... All of a sudden, Obama is channeling Dubya.
This President has his own agenda, and it’s not conservative, or Republican...or the traditional Democrat, for that matter.
It doesn’t matter if it was Bush, or anyone else who governed, in his eyes, “the wrong way.”
He’s a Marxist to the core, and was happy to see most of the blue dog dems thrown out of Congress.
So, I have to disagree with you...it has nothing to do with Bush. It has everything to do with his version of the future of us as a third world country.
Bush is the best scapegoat he can find...and “the people” fell for it. I have hope that they are not still falling for it.
