Nun sexually abused me, man claims in lawsuit

A Broward County man on Tuesday filed suit against the Archdiocese of Miami and a Dominican nun, claiming he was fondled and groped while in the first grade at St. James Catholic School in North Miami.

The man, now 38, claims Sister Joan Marie would approach him while standing in line with his classmates and pretend to tuck in his shirt. But the nun would reach down his pants and sexually abuse him, said his attorney, Jeffrey Herman.

Only identified as John Doe 73 — representing the number of cases Herman has filed against the archdiocese for alleged sexual misconduct — the man has decided to file the suit now because his own son is entering the first grade, Herman said.

“He just couldn’t be silent any longer. When he looks at his own son, he realizes he needs to speak out to protect other kids,” he said.

It was common in the public schools, too. In fourth grade in my public school, I saw a teacher break a girl’s wrist by shaking her and then slamming her across against the blackboard.

The gym teacher routinely disciplined the boys by making them bend over and then kicking their backsides.

Discipline was simply a lot harsher in all school settings until the last few decades.

Discipline? Let’s call it what it is: abuse!

What was considered discipline back then(I can still taste the eraser dust and see the welts on my knuckles) would be considered assault today ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

It was assault.

Perhaps in some specific circumstances, but generally, not. Corporal punishment works.

Sometimes corporal punishment is the only thing that works — it’s either spank the kid or surrender to him.

True. Spare not the rod if you love thy child.
Discipline, founded in love can sometimes be the only tool that is ultimately effective.

I am stunned at some of the responses here. The allegations involve an adult having sexual contact with a FIRST-GRADER, a boy about six years old. How is that NOT a problem?
