CNN agrees with Minnesota Independent report: Bachmann claim is false CNNs Anderson Cooper fact-checked Rep. Michele Bachmanns remarks about Planned Parenthood on Tuesday, particularly Bachmanns repeated claims that Planned Parenthood wants to be the LensCrafters of Big Abortion. Cooper found that claim, made most recently on Monday during her visit to Iowa, to be incorrect. The Minnesota Independents check on that claim last year came to a similar conclusion. At an event by the Family Leader in Iowa last weekend, Bachmann said, The executive director of Planned Parenthood in Illinois said, We want Planned Parenthood wants to be the LensCrafters of Big Abortion. They are the largest provider of abortion in the United States. And not only that, the are one of the largest political organizations you can imagine as well. Cooper said, Shes made up a quote. Bachmann is grossly distorting a remark by the head of the Illinois Planned Parenthood from an interview with the Wall Street Journal in 2008. As the Minnesota Independent reported in 2010:
She recently opened three express centers in wealthy Minnesota suburbs, in shopping centers and malls, places where women are already doing their grocery shopping, picking up their Starbucks, living their daily lives, Ms. Stoesz said. The mall sites promise walk-in convenience and clothes-on care, with services limited to birth-control counseling and tests for pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections. Most patients are in and out in less than half an hour. I like to think of it as the LensCrafters of family planning, Steve Trombley, the top executive in Illinois, said as he toured an express center a few doors down from a hair salon and a Japanese restaurant in the well-to-do suburb of Schaumburg, Ill. Those clinics provide services other than abortions, which further contradicts Bachmanns claim. Cooper added that Planned Parenthood has spent far less on politics than Bachmann asserts. He notes that during the 2010 midterms, the United States Chamber of Commerce spent $33 million and the SEIU spent $53 million much more than the $1 million Planned Parenthood spent on the election. Compared to the others, Cooper said, its hard to call it one of the largest political organizations you can imagine. Cooper last took on Bachmanns grasp of facts last November after the Sixth District Republican falsely claimed that a trip to India by President Obama would cost taxpayers $200 million per day. When grilled by the BBC, Bachmann backtracked slightly, saying she was merely quoting a newspaper in India that made the inaccurate claim.Bachmann made up a quote about Planned Parenthood
By Andy Birkey | 04.13.11 | 3:45 pm It is high time we follow the population, said Sarah Stoesz, who heads Planned Parenthood operations in three Midwest states.
As a Planned Parenthood clinic manager, I was directed to double the number of abortions our clinic performed in order to drive up revenue. In keeping, Planned Parenthood headquarters recently issued a directive mandating that all of its affiliates provide abortions by 2013.Seems to me Bachmann is right on the money.
Nah...they want to be “jack in the box”...
We’ll kill your baby, in about an hour.
Sounds true to me.
Haha, that is some straight up weak “fact checking”. They are hanging on her every word!
It sounds like she slightly modified a genuine quote—she didn’t make something up out of whole cloth.
Do the people of Anderson Cooper’s “sexual persuasion” really have a voice in the abortion debate?
Andy Vanderbilt is a felching moronic Libtard with zero (0) ratings. Screw CNN.
Seems to me Bachmann is right on the money.
or Out of the Box, in this case...
You could call them Nazi death camps, but the Nazis only killed 10 million and PP has killed 55 million. Your tax dollars at work.
Pray for America
Bachman quoted them word for word. Which is a lot more than most of today’s bogus reporters can claim.
Maybe she should have instead used “Pearle Vision” as an example?
Poke ‘em and croak ‘em?
Rachel Maddow, Anderson Cooper; all the same.
You are certainly correct. Planned Parenthood’s main source of revenue is abortions. They also engage in another little side line, which makes me sick, so I will not mention it here in this venue.
While she must be a smart person, bing a ex-IRS prosecutor or some such, she sure presents he own self as an idiot from time to time.
Yes, she's right on darn near every issue I care about.
Nice of the Media, though, to insert that tangential India quote. Yes, Mrs. Bachmann did mess up on the Obambi India junket quote of costing taxpayers $200M a day... It is true that Obambi brings a large posse with him on his adventures - and we taxpayers have to foot the bill for these royals -- but $200M/day is off the map. Mrs. Bachmann should have caught that one as not passing the smell test. Still, even at $2M/day (or whatever it was), the Obambi entourage was ripping off the American public. - So in principle her criticism was correct - but her specifics were off.
And I’m SURE they came out with the article condemning Harry’s Ried’s “Republicans want to kill 6 million Seniors!’ remark, right before this, right??
Their "fact checkers" FAIL.
