Where 2012 GOP hopefuls stand on the Ryan budget [Donald Trump says it hurts seniors]

TRUMP

Emphasizing that he “cherish[es] our seniors,” The Donald said in an interview that Republicans are on a risky “ledge” by backing a plan that could be perceived as hurting older Americans. “I’d have to study the plan,” Trump said in an interview on CNN. “I will tell you, I think it's very dangerous for the Republicans to go on this ledge, because I, for one, would have to be very, very careful.”

“I have a lot of respect for Paul Ryan, but what is happening is the Republicans are going way, way, way far out on the ledge,” he said. .

The total collapse that will certainly occur if we don't make major changes in federal spending will hurt seniors (and everyone else) much more than will Paul Ryan's budget. I guess I'm still waiting to find a politician who really understands the situation we're in.

Cutting 30, 60, or even 100 billion isn't going to get us there. Until the Republicans wake up and realize that the overall scope of the federal government must be radically reduced (say, cut by 50% and work downward from there), we will continue on our downward spiral. I want to see entire departments eliminated. A good start would be Education, Energy, and EPA.

The entire mentality MUST change, otherwise we're just rearranging the proverbial deck chairs on the Titanic.

Nobody will want to give up anything. Every cut will gore someone’s ox. Every cut will be ‘going too far’ in someone’s eyes. This is what makes it difficult. But, I don’t see any way around that. If they don’t do something it will all crash and there will be nothing for anyone, well, except for the elite polititians of course. They will always have. I do believe destruction is the goal in all of this.

I agree with Trump. I’m not happy with Ryan’s plan because of its complete lack of shared sacrifice from those on the top rungs compared to a broad spectrum of hard working middle class Americans. I’m tired of paying more in taxes than GE and a higher tax rate than all multi-billionaires.

Being conservative is not about sacrificing the country or my middle class at the benefit of a few, many of which (the financial service sector)have already been benefited beyond what they deserve. Jamie Dimond is an example.

It takes money to build infrastructure and fight wars, and I haven’t seen anyone paying for it. Instead we out source jobs and put society in debt just to bail out Wall St and those who created this mess.

Being a fiscal conservative I was pxxxed in 2001 and 2003 with the irresponsible tax cuts and spending of the Republicans. Exactly what I predicted then has occurred. I switched then to Independent where I will remain.

January 24, 2003

Dear Congressman ...

Fiscal responsibility means balancing a budget. It means paying off debt. It means not spending more than you make. It was the first item in the Republican Contract with America in 1995 (The Fiscal Responsibility Act). It used to be a Republican mantra. It now seems forgotten in an effort by Pres. Bush to make the wealthiest and top 5% in net worth and income even wealthier.

I’m all for cutting taxes as long we cut spending to go along with it. The problem is we’re not cutting spending but increasing it. The inevitable payback burden will be shifted from the wealthiest of today to our posterity. It will also inevitably affect the stability of the Social Security and Medicare trusts which are conveniently used by the government as collateral so to speak.

snipped

As a Republican, I would much prefer if Bush would use some fiscal common sense in his proposals. If short term stimulus is needed then target it. I opposed his tax cut in 2001 as I felt the then projected 10 year budget surplus was nothing but the smoke and mirrors it turned out to be. We had just gone through the longest economic expansion in US history. I wonder about the motives and competence of Bush’s economic advisers if they would advise that the expansion would go on for another 10 years.

Sorry meant to clarify that I included on my post a letter I wrote to my Republican Congressman in 2003. Being a fiscal conservative I understand now just like I did them that sometimes my personal sacrifice is required for the greater good.

He doesn’t float my boat. He’s got no political record and he can say “I’ve always believed” no matter what he says.

we should free the economy from the stranglehold of Federal Regulations..

Nice evasion, but we are going nowhere without cutting current level of spending severely. The country is about to learn that the hard way.

General Ryan... really? Good grief.

Are you aware that Ryan’s plan still raises the deficit by trillions? That’s he’s basing it on Obama’s budget?

He did it without a government bailout as well... which is more than you can say for Bush and Obama’s corporate cronies.

I’m a shill? What’s my “ulterior motive?” Excuse me if I don’t want a liberal anywhere near the White House with an “R” next to his name. That also goes for Romney, Huckabee, Huntsman, and possibly a few of the others with questionable records. Trump may be the worst one, and given that Romney is in the race, I don’t say that lightly.

"This is exactly the talk I keep hearing from FR seniors who want the absolute status quo on entitlements (just as Democrats do)...Now, if you want to appeal to those voters whose view is "Don't touch the entitlements until after I'm dead, let my grandkids bear the burden",..."

Your presumptions are incorrect. Old folks' entitlements should be abolished for all Baby Boomers, as I've written. I am disgusted with feminists in politics, though--even the male feminists. [Follow the link on the next page to see some typical, bipartisan male feminists in politics.]
