Teachers, Assembly leader seeking taxes without ballot
SacBee: Capitol Alert ^ | 4/12/11 | Kevin Yamamura

The head of the California Teachers Association said Tuesday he wants state leaders to drop Gov. Jerry Brown's idea of asking voters to extend higher taxes and instead approve the taxes themselves in the Capitol.

"I believe that as much as our governor has been extremely transparent and honest in doing what he told folks he'd do - which is let the people decide - it's too late for that," said CTA President David Sanchez in a phone interview. "Once you put it on the ballot after June, it's no longer an extension, it becomes new taxes. And once they're new taxes, the people won't support that. I think the Legislature ought to do that themselves."

Brown had been counting on significant financial backing from CTA, the state's largest teachers union, to support his campaign for five years of higher taxes on vehicles, sales and income. The Democratic governor built his budget so the taxes would ensure K-12 schools avoid cuts.

Brown had been counting on significant financial backing from CTA

That right there is why public unions should be banned.

The unions love taxes.

Tax the unions for all the budget busting they demand.

See how that goes...

So the question is can Brown get 2/3rds of the legislature to go along with the increase in taxes?

Will 2 Republicans both the Assembly and Senate go along with this?

It is only natural the teachers unions want to go this route because they know the voters will reject the tax increases. So again, the question for someone in California is, will all the Republicans hold together and make sure he doesn’t get the 2/3rds needed to raise taxes?

Tax union dues at the highest marginal rate
charged to earned income in the state. Let
them pay their “fair share”.

I doubt it.

If Brown couldn't get 4 Republican votes to put the taxes on the ballot, he sure won't find an outright vote to raise taxes.

There are no totalitarians like U.S. public school totalitarians.

Not even in China.

What the Left has created in the teachers and administrators of the public schools is a moral filth so profound, and a cruelty so perverse, that it literally has no historical comparison in human history. These people are GONE.

I'm still waiting for someone to explain why they need FIVE YEARS of tax extensions to cover a ONE YEAR deficit.

That doesn't make any sense. Brown never gave an adequate answer to this question. As I recall, he simply remarked that five years seemed about right to him. No explanation, no reason.

They're just trying to grab as much money as possible from the taxpayers. Business as usual, nothing ever changes in Sacramento.
