~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Naval Construction Battalion Center, Gulfport, Mississippi

Naval Construction Battalion Center [NCBC] Gulfport functions as a support for operating units of the Naval Construction Force. Specifically, it supports Naval Mobile Construction Battalions ONE, SEVEN, SEVENTY-FOUR, and ONE THIRTY-THREE, TWENTIETH Naval Construction Regiment, the Naval Construction Training Center, and other smaller tenant activities.

The mission is to prepare for and support all facets of the mobilization of construction forces, including reserve units. The Center is also responsible for preservation and storage of war reserves including construction equipment and materials.

The Seabees have been the military construction arm of the U.S. Navy since 1942. The first Seabees were civilian construction workers who enlisted early in World War II to continue building for the Navy in the Pacific Theater and in Europe. Their accomplishments during the war are legendary.

Nearly 200,000 men, master craftsmen, the most skillful of the nation's skilled workers, are credited with paving the road to victory for the allies in the Pacific and in Europe. The work done by the Seabees was work only they could do. Using brains, brawn, blood and "Can Do", they hacked at jungle growth and blasted coral to build the victory road to Tokyo. It appears a certainty that the 10,000-mile accomplishment will always remain the Seabees' greatest masterwork.

Mobile construction battalions continue to build and fight today. At one time there were nearly 25,000 sons of World War II Seabees in Vietnam building camps for America's armed forces, repairing roads, bridges and airstrips, teaching the tricks of their trade to the Vietnamese and building orphanages, schools, hospitals and market places during off-duty hours.

The U.S. Navy Seabees have a long history of success. Naval Construction Forces are assisting the people of Japan after the recent earthquake and tsunami, they are getting dirty in the rainforests of South America supporting humanitarian exercises, and they are building roads and schools in the deserts of the Middle East. The Seabees' ability to make more with less is legendary.

Afghanistan, one of the poorest countries in the world, requires all of the Seabees’ talents and then some – repairing roads, digging wells, building security outposts, pulling vehicles from the mud.

Very warm and way too dry. We have been on Fire Warnings the last several days because of the dryness and the winds.

Rained a small bit this morning, but we need a gully-washer!
