Otherworldly Planet Rise .
Explanation: What would a sunrise look like on another world? So far, humanity has only recorded sunrises on Mars and Earth, but it is fun to wonder what they would look like on planets known and yet unknown. Planets far from their parent star would record the rise of an unusually bright point of light rather than a round orb.
Although this might appear to be what is pictured above, the careful combination of long exposures and creative lighting is actually based on Venus-rise from planet Earth a few weeks ago, captured through Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park, Utah, USA.
Picturesque buttes and mesas dot the background landscape.
The orange sky is created by air scattering and dust, but is likely reminiscent of dusty skyscapes on Mars.
Sunrise was set to occur a few minutes hence, and did indeed involve a round orb.

So where’s NASA been?
His awesome creation!
Clouds are caused by evaporation, which requires some heat. A sun that distant could not likely produce enough heat to evaporate enough water to produce clouds.
But it could be another fluid evaporating at a much lower temperature, so I could be wrong!
Reminds me of the planet Arrikis (sp?) in Frank Herbert’s original “Dune.”
WOW.. LOVELY
Beautiful!
I’ve taken some amazing screenshots from EVE Online. Since I’ve upgraded my graphics platforms, the stills I get are pretty spectacular, and despite being a video game, I have to imagine there’s some interesting similarities to the real thing out in our vast universe.
Bump for a most excellent picture. Keeps my mind’s eye wandering for a few more hours.
An artist’s rendition of. . .
I’ve stood right in that spot. You folks should visit Canyonlands in Utah (and the surrounding national parks) if you ever get the chance.
If I ever get the chance, I will.
That’s stunning!!!
Anyone have any suggestions for sights in the El Paso/New Mexico area? Is there anything like this picture in or near El Paso, or should we just go directly to Santa Fe? Thoughts? Comments?
Girlfriend wants to go away for Memorial Day and I don’t want to go to back to Napa/Sonoma, California.
There are national parks near El Paso (Guadalupe Mountains, Big Bend), but these are a bit different from the Utah parks. Santa Fe isn’t that stark, either (and SF is, frankly, overrated, and I’ve been there several times). To see that great spot in Utah, fly to Moab and take 3-5 days there to take in Canyonlands and Arches National Parks.
Thank you FM! So you’re saying skip Santa Fe then?
Well, I’m sure it’s a place you’d want to visit at least once, but it really depends upon what you’d like to see. Your g/f may like it, especially if she likes to walk around the square and see the local Indians peddling silver & turquoise jewelry and the overpriced shops and art galleries, but it seems like something you’d prefer to pass on.
BINGO!!! She’s into the artiste stuff. Me, not so much.
I’ll have to “shape” the itinerary of the trip. I’ll hit you up for more suggestions as the trip gets closer.
BIG THANKS!
Majestic.
