Thoughts On The Deal

In a phrase: It was a draw. Game tied after the early innings. Not one of the key riders made it through the process, but Boehner proved himself a tough, able negotiator given the hand he was dealt by his appropriators. The cuts are indeed large relative to what has gone before, but they are woefully inadequate to the fiscal crisis facing the country. This accounts for what David Freddoso calls the sense of resignation among conservatives as details emerge. They know the country is still on the cliff, and that markets won't take much comfort from a tie.

Boehner's improved close and Paul Ryan's sweeping budget plan helped the House GOP avoid a disaster after a stumbling, bumbling start to the session which saw the opening spending reduction bid of the GOP Congress come in at almost $10 billion less than what it achieved as a compromise. This is the great lesson for the House GOP: It must cut deep and deeper still in its own deliberations to set up the negotiation in the fall, the one that will matter far more than this one.

The Examiner's Philip Klein argues it is the best that could have been done. It may be the best that could be done given the flawed opening of the year and the mistakes that marked the lame duck session, but it wasn't a victory, although it wasn't a collapse and it wasn't a rout.

What matters now are the individual appropriations bills that should march quickly through that committee and follow the Ryan plan --and indeed improve on it with spending reductions that the individual subcommittees should be working overtime to find. If the Speaker allows the appropriators to adopt the schedule of years past it will be another lost opportunity. The House should be aggressively moving to set the table for the bigger debates and then use the summer to define the issues and the Senate as the stand-pat big spenders the Reid forces are. When the next round in this drama unfolds as September draws to a close, everyone should be able to point to a consistent argument made from now until then about where we need to be and how we get there via the appropriations process.

IOW... WE conservatives STFU while the elite in both parties steal OUR wealth for themselves and secure THEIR power for the coming socialist caliphate.

Debt ceiling.
Debt ceiling.
Debt ceiling.

There is only one reason to raise the debt ceiling -- because you have every intention of going further into debt.

If you want to avoid further debt, if you want to limit federal spending, then you freeze the debt ceiling.

Stand back and watch the GOP not do this.

The republicans were idiots on this budget, and they got played.

Instead of picking a battle where THE ENTIRE GD COUNTRY IS READY TO FIGHT ALONGSIDE THEM (Obamacare), they chose to make their most decisive stand on an issue that, to many swing voters, defines them as overreaching religious zealots and has no bearing whatsoever on stopping the relentless onslaught of socialism.

Way to go. I can hardly wait to see what happens next.

The majority must feel significantly more pain, before Obama is discredited and sent packing. Inflation may do the trick; big time out of control type inflation.

Ditto for me. The debt ceiling needs to be capped and now. But thats not going to happen. Boehnor said weeks ago that they will have to agree to raise the debt ceiling. What is the good of cutting the budget only to raise the debt ceiling? Its insane but thats what will happen.

I am going to hold my fire til we see what really happens but personally I think this train is so far down the tracks it cannot be stopped unless the Congress cuts $1 trillion from next year’s budget. Its never going to happen. Boehner will cave and negotiate it away.

My prediction is that the GOP leadership in the next couple of months will so enrage the conservative wing of the party that they will turn to Trump in droves and we may see him as the GOP candidate in 2012.

The price of raising the debt ceiling needs to be very high.
It should be this:
- NO DEBT CEILING INCREASE UNLESS OBAMACARE IS DEFUNDED AND REPEALED.

Go to the mat on that, GOP.

1. OBAMACARE IS DEFUNDED AND REPEALED.
2. We have a plan to balance the budget and put spending caps in place to ensure it will happen.
3. We protect taxpayers.

Go to the mat on that, GOP.

Republicans do not have the stomach for this fight. Just remember how the democrats play hard ball and for keeps...can you say “ObamaCare”?

Look at the way Obama abuses the power of his office, private sector take overs, negating bond holders rights, on and on and on.

He thrives because the MSM gives him a pass.

The Repubs should have went after the $100 bill in one strategic place. De-fund ObamaCare...take back the $100 bill that was hidden in the bill.

Now that would have been a substantive and symbolic feat all wrapped in one.
