It must be a pretty obvious case of self defense. The 23 year old shot the 56 year old. Very little detail in the story.

Sounds like a road rage incident that escalated, just my guess.

Just keep driving and forget about it. Why do people stop?

Stupid Headline: "Man dead, Gilbert police release gunman in case they call self-defense"

According to the story:

Police said Sunday it appeared the unidentified 23-year-old acted in self-defense and he was released after questioning.
So he wasn't released "in case" they call self-defense; he was released BECAUSE it was apparently self-defense.

Very little detail, but if somebody gets out of a vehicle with a gun and starts approaching my vehicle, I will pull my gun and put two shots in center mass, and if the person doesn’t drop to the ground immediatly I follow up with one to the middle of the face.

Thats what I was thinking, why did they both stop in the first place?

The 56-year-old had apparently gotten out of his truck with a gun and was approaching a pickup driven by a 23-year-old man when that man got out and opened fire.

Having read it again, I believe you are correct. However, a proofreader and editor should do a better job of writing clear headlines.

Seems pretty clear cut to me.

Why do they need a proofreader or an editor when they have spill cheque?

Seems pretty clear cut to me.

It seems like limited info to me. What we have here is one man dead and a version of events told by the shooter, filtered through the police and the press, then condensed to a 90 word story

We probably don’t have a complete or accurate version of events.

The police know more about it than either of us and they let the guy go. It’s clear that police and prosecuters aren’t really fond of people defending themselves and if they could have burned him odds are they would have. If the facts of the article are correct the guy was perfectly justified in defending himself and I’m not sure why we would go through the effort of assuming guilt before finding the guy innocent.

If you are at a traffic light, are you going to run it?

If your harasser cuts you off at a light and prevents your forward movement and you find yourself stuck, where are you going go as he approaches your vehicle with a firearm?

In Street Survival II we are trained to open the door and using the door/frame of the vehicle engage the threat.

Most of the time its very possible to go around, back up or use evasive driving. Not every time but many of these cases involve both drivers stopping to argue when one decides to use a weapon.

And yes I would run a red light assuming traffic allowed it.

I, too, would try to evade, if it were possible.

In 1992 I got caught in traffic by an irate/crazed driver in a pick-up truck. This incident was initiated and propagated entirely my him with no provocation provided by me-no gestures, aggressive driving, nothing. I was surprised that he would pursue me the next two miles. I eventually got trapped behind other traffic and could no longer evade. He actually exited his vehicle throwing a fit outside my driver's door. Luckily he did not have a firearm, or I wouldn't be here today.

I started learning defensive pistolcraft because of this very incident. Needless to say, after rehearsing this incident in my mind for years, I'd conduct the pursuit very differently today.

Stay safe.
