St. Louis - Rising demand for corn from ethanol producers is pushing U.S. reserves to the lowest point in 15 years, a trend that could lead to higher grain and food prices this year. The Agriculture Department on Friday left its estimate for corn reserves unchanged from the previous month. The reserves are projected to fall to 675 million bushels in late August, when the harvest begins, or roughly 5 percent of all corn consumed in the United States. That would be the lowest surplus level since 1996.The limited supply is chiefly because of increasing demand from ethanol makers, which

Everone wanted to be rid of “The Cheap Food for Consumers Programs”, usually referred to as “The Farm Subsidies Programs’ which ‘paid farmers not to plant’.

Their wish has come true, in practice at least. Finally, consumers have what they have wished for for decades.

Tagline still true.

Conversion of food into fuel was, is, and will remain, a SIN.

I know! Let’s raise the subsidies! Pretty clear lose-lose proposition that seems to fit the current narrative on “green” energy.

So, how much more corn starch do you think the average American should have in his diet?

Even PETA doesn't even realize how many cute little Bambi's will die a miserable death via starvation because of the shortage of corn feed.

All because of a fictitious earthly demise created for political gain.

Why, how?

We have mountains of the stuff, and we've shown the whole world how to produce mountains of it for themselves.

They've rejected our proven methods.

LET'EM STARVE TO DEATH. THERE'S A PRICE TO PAY FOR STUBBORNESS AND STUPIDITY.

Meanwhile, burn if you've got it.

Less corn = soaring meat prices. - most of that corn goes to animal feed.

I just knew it was a bad idea to use food for fuel.

I don’t know about other states but Texas and Oklahoma are in a world of hurt, they need some rain or we’re going to have a much smaller wheat and corn crop.

“The Cheap Food for Consumers Programs”, is good but I’d also call it the “United States Security Program”.

I believe that we are coming to a time when things aren’t going to be readily available, even if you have the money.

I am a big promoter of healthy green eating. Feed grains and greens to cattle, and eat healthy steaks. Once that cornstarch has been converted into beef, I'm all for it.

I am just saying that the wholesale conversion of foodstuffs into motor fuels, makes our entire planet's human population all that much more susceptible to starvation. If we destroy our "surpluses" then there will be nothing in the storehouse when there are large-scale crop failures or other food-related calamities in the world.

Using "Just in time" techniques in our food supply does not provide a lot of safety margin in case something goes wrong. Auto plants all over the country are shutting down due to lack of parts from quake-ravaged areas of Japan. What happens when there is a disruption in food supply? People just wait a few weeks for food? Good luck with that.

We need to retain a fair amount of safety margin in our global food supply, and conversion of our margins into motor fuel is a recipe for disaster for somebody.
