Washington (CNN) Furloughed jobs, interrupted services, and the potential economic ramifications aside, top Republican strategist Karl Rove is warning a government shutdown is likely to strengthen President Obama's hand as he heads into his reelection campaign.
In his weekly polling memo, Rove notes the 1995 government shutdown bolstered President Clinton's image in the eyes of voters as a strong leader, positioning him for a relatively easy reelection victory one year later.
"The shutdowns helped improve Clinton's political standing, boosting both his approval rating and perceptions of him as a strong leader," writes Rove. "At the time, poll watchers noted that, 'the only time Clinton's ratings have improved substantially the past year as a result of his actions has been when he adopted a strategy of confrontation.'"
Rove reports Clinton's approval rating saw nearly a double-digit jump during the 1995 government shutdown and continued to climb as the reelection campaign began in earnest.

If Turd Blossom doesn’t like it, it’s probably good for the country. The more I see and hear of him the less likable he becomes.
This is an ‘all in’ moment. Call their bluff. Let the media ramble on. IF the people don’t get it now and don’t respond in the 2012 election, then we’re lost anyway. Actually we may have lost already, but we have NOTHING to lose standing on principle here.
It’s next to impossible to compare Clinton and Obama. Clinton had tremendous campaign skills...he need how to negotiate....and he knew how to bring people around the table. Other than speech skills...that’s the only area that Obama has a plus over Clinton.
In this budget situation....it could go fairly negative, so I wouldn’t let this last more than a couple of days max.
SHUDDUP KARL!!!!!!!!!!! AND do NOT under estimate The Tea Party support in 2012!

How much is Obama/Axelrod/etc. paying you?
Clinton DID NOT have Trillion dollar deficits, Oh Brilliant One.
I have to agree on point one, in particular. How did the Republicans get hurt by the 1995 shutdown? They won the House and Senate in 1996, and the only reason Clinton won re-election was because he was running against Bob Dole, a horrible candidate. And Clinton only got 49%, didn’t even top 50%. Voters aren’t going to toss out Republicans in 2012 over this. It’s only if they don’t cut spending and stand up to 0 and the Dems.
Vote for the better evil?
Party over principle?
Compromise conservatism?
All that has nearly left America dead on the floor.
Yes but this time next year there will be a 2012 budget to force a new shutdown.
After the way he stabbed Christine O’Donnell in the back, I have no further use for Rove. Rove is a tool of the Establishment Republicans.
The MSM = ALL of TV including Fox which is covering up for him. The others are worse but all TV covers for him.
Rule of thumb: Whatever Rove recommends, do the opposite.
True. It should be interesting. Somehow the big fat government (and the parasites it supports) needs a huge attitude ajustment or we're really toast.
Karmically, he should have been indicted instead of Scooter. Then he'd be tainted for life and I wouldn't have to come in these threads and scold him publically for being a mindless, nattering fishwife.
Karl Rove is to conservatism what Barack Obama is to conservatism
Karl Rove isn’t on our side anymore. If he ever was...
Predicting outcomes of some events is possibly astute, but not necessarily right. Regardless he helped squander 6 very important years and couldn’t have done more to help elect Obama than if he were his campaign manager.
lol
right.
Everyone knows the polls show the VAST majority of Americans do not support federal funding of abortion.
