Democratic congresswoman complains she can’t afford to give up her paycheck

With 8.8 percent unemployment across the country and more than 8 million people claiming unemployment benefits, one California congresswoman wants people to know they’re not the only ones facing financial hardship. Who else might be? The lawmaker herself.

In an appearance on MSNBC Thursday, Democratic California Rep. Linda Sánchez talked about the downsides of a federal government shutdown. Some lawmakers, to the seriousness of the issue, have said they would forgo their paychecks in the event of that shutdown. Sanchez explained she just can’t afford to go along with that idea.

“I have to tell you that I live paycheck-to-paycheck, like most Americans,” Sánchez said. “I’m still paying off my student loans. I have a 2-year-old son who I have to support, and I have to maintain residences on both coasts. It’s very difficult for me to say, ‘Hey, I can give up my paycheck,’ because the reality is, I have financial obligations that I have to meet on a month-to-month basis that doesn’t make it possible for me.”

“I’m still paying off my student loans”

Which says a lot more about the government student loan system than your wealth

Then quit and go get a job you’re smart enough to do—like mopping floors at McDonalds. MAYBE you’d be smart enough to work the deep fryer. MAYBE.

Good!!! Let them close down congress and they all can go on employment for 99 weeks. Think how better the nation would be without them.

Maybe somebody should tell this chick that the trillions she has racked up in debt on the American people is not sustainable and the confiscatory taxes she supports makes Americans live paycheck to paycheck.

Welcome to the club. Perhaps we should do this every year just to remind these idiots about the realities of life for those of us who work most of the year to support the government's spending addiction.

Well Sanchez, I’ll bet that there are more than 20 million unemployed American’s that would be more than happy to advise you on this. You might even be eligible for free cheese.

While dumpster diving, if it smells like maggots...it’s just you, so go ahead and continue eating.

When the hangings begin, she’ll be a screamer.

I think she’s trying to make a point that she lives paycheck to paycheck like many do, and has little cushion to support herself in an emergency. Many of us have little sympathy for officials in congress, but even our military will not receive pay until the government resumes. For those who continue to work during the shutdown, paychecks will be put on hold. No exceptions (of course this does not include SS, which is automated).

The current salary (2011) for rank-and-file members of the House and Senate is $174,000 per year. She doesn't have to contribute to her pension or medical. Anyone making that kind of money who can't budget for a rainy day must...oh wait, she's in congress, obviously spending more than you have is de rigor.

OK Linda. So get a real job like the rest of us.

Doesn't this idiot realize we have all gone through the same thing in our lives? Why should government officials be exempt?

Poor Linda. She hasn't been there long enough to collect the millions in graft her sister and the other members of Congress have.
What poor Linda should do is cut back on the Bonbons and see if Loretta will help her out for a week of so.

I haven't researched her voting record, but I'd be willing to bet that her record is littered with votes supporting legislation that resulted closing small businesses, employees of corporations being laid off, etc.  I wonder if she's capable of seeing the hypocrisy?  Somehow, I doubt it.

All I remember of Sanchez is how much like an idiot she sounded when congress was giving General Patraeus his inquisition.

I see nothing has changed.
