Wisconsin’s Republican Gov. Scott Walker has reversed the promotion of a 27-year-old son of a lobbyist whose appointment to an $81,500 administration job sparked cronyism claims by Democrats.
Walker’s spokesman Cullen Werwie said in a statement Tuesday that Brian Deschane will return to his previous $65,000 job with the Department of Regulation and Licensing just two days after the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel first reported his hiring and promotion.
It’s the latest chapter in the ongoing showdown between Walker and Democratic legislators, including senators who fled the state on Feb. 17 to temporarily delay a vote on a bill ending most union rights for public workers.

Walker may be cooked. They did not take the threat from the leftwing seriously enough. I know this is not popular around here with many, but this is why Chris Christie is a mega talent for our party. He has succeeded in a much more difficult state politically and is winning.
Believe me, I am pulling like hell for Walker and the GOP in WI, but I am seeing a tidal shift.

Christie knows how to establish and maintain the narrative. He counter-punches quickly and effectively without being seen as whiny. That's not easy to do, but Christie does it effortlessly. Republican governor's would do well to follow Christie's lead in this regard, if they capable.

Seems like a fair comparison. Christie has experience as a litigator, Walker as an administrator. I’ll say this: We all screw up, and I’ve got a lot more respect for the guy who has second thoughts about an appointment and decides he made the wrong call and reverses it than I do for the politician who stands and fights for every single issue regardless of its importance. It’s knowing when to hold and when to fold. And Walker hasn’t folded on anything of real importance.
His only mistake, to the extent that he's made any mistakes, is that he let the left's criticism of him and his policies gain a bit too much traction. And, it's not that he didn't fight back. He did. But, he just wasn't effective enough at it. I'm sure he'll learn from this experience, he seems like a very bright guy.
What a crock, the damn kid is an uneducated drunk, he should be washing trucks down at the DOT, flagman would be aboven his abilities the good governor has messed up big time.
You are just seeing the liberal media at work. It’s only a shift if the weak reeds crumble, and the left is adept at making phony crises and noises to try to do just that.
Yet he didnt cave on the big issue of unions. Bully for him.
fixing the appt was a good move on Govs part, a minor error quickly corrected.
The Gov needs to keep his eye on the prize and focus on getting his agenda done. Govs like Mitch Daniels did that and prospered. Gov Walker is doing a good job so far, he just has a s88t-storm of opposition because NATIONAL union leaders saw the import of this and made WI their battleground.
Gov Walker also needs to get out there and tell his story. That is what Christie has been good at, making it clear WHY he is doing what he is doing and showing up the unions forthe goons they really are.
Been looking at Tuesday’s Wisconsin election with a very seasoned Dem insider (former state legislator) today.
For all the hype on yesterday’s election and the full force of union funding and huge disparity in Dem interest vs. Republicans, the best they were able to muster was a 50/50 split on the supreme court - and that because Janesville turned out well above the level of all other counties.
In every key “swing” county in Wisconsin, the Republicans carried the vote. Bad news for Senator Kohl or other statewide races in 2012.
Don’t despair - although I agree with you that the Wisconsin state Republican party is significantly overhyped. They’re frankly not very skilled or organized, despite national media hype.
That said, the “union killing” collective bargaining issue will resolve itself before going to the courts via a legislative maneuver. It’s a done deal. The court wrangling is just theater for the Dem base.
Walker’s peak is at the state level. He’s a tremendous asset to the state, but he’s limited because he is honestly and earnestly focused only on the state. He’s not focused outside the state borders and never has been a media guy. He works to do the right thing as a caretaker and administrator and is not caught up with egotistical notions of serving up a dishing of higher good or fulfilling destiny.
Speaking of nepotism, Walker’s predecessor, Governor Doyle had a unlicensed lay person serving as his general counsel and representing him and the state in legal matters. It was a fun story to discuss but didn’t hurt him in the end.
This is a nothing story that will be forgotten in a week.
I agree somewhat as to most of what you said. As for the topic of the article, I think Walker should have stood his ground on the appointment. Pubs have got to stop caving.
Don't let the nice persona fool you. Walker is a warrior who knows who he's up against.
Your giving up way too fast. This was a battle, not the war and our side in WI met the enemy half way, 50/50. Waves come and go, keep your eyes on the tide which is rising still.
His only mistake...was impatience.
This whole mess could have been avoided if the Wisconsin GOP had waited until after this election, locked the doors and then proposed the changes!
It would have been a slam dunk. No riots, no vandals, no recounts.
Don’t believe it. The election of the State Supreme judge should tell everyone there’s a battle going on in Wisconsin. It may be the Republicans lost but it wasn’t by much. That’s saying a lot when you have the unions pouring millions of dollars into the effort. This is just another effort by the MSM to discredit Walker.
If the tide is shifting it’s against the Democrats.
