House Speaker John Boehner says congressional leaders and President Barack Obama did not reach a budget agreement following a White House meeting. Boehner says Republicans are rallying behind a short-term cure.
Obama met with Boehner, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and the top House and Senate appropriators Tuesday in hopes of breaking an impasse in talks to set spending levels through the end of September. Without an agreement by Friday, the government would be forced to shut down.
Boehner said he told Obama that House Republicans are preparing a short-term measure that would keep the government running for another week while extending defense spending through September.
Boehner disputed White House assertions that both parties have agreed to set cuts in spending at $33 billion. Republicans want $61 billion in cuts.

Dems believe the Contract with America wave died out when the shut down took place. They WANT the government shut down and the state-run MSM will blame the Republicans. A set up.
Is John Boehner going to come through for us after all?
“Boehner Says There’s No Deal”
Good.
There's an important difference between 1995 and today, though.
Most Americans now believe that shutting down the government is a good idea.
The biggest difference between 1995 and today is that in 1995 the deficit was around $165 billion. Today, it is 10 times that.
It sounds better than what would likely be the "deal."
The Dem’s are judging this wrong IMO..People by and large would LOVE the Gov’t to be shutdown for a variety of reasons. The Dem’s are stuck in the 90’s on this issue and it won’t fly this time; even with the state run media as cheerleaders.
That would be great; I'm just not sure it's true.
Presumably Obama thought all he had to do was rub his cheek with his middle finger, tell Boehner "John, I WON", and that would the end of it.
Not good.
“Boehner said he told Obama that House Republicans are preparing a short-term measure that would keep the government running...”
They won’t shut it down. They’d actually have to stop spending money.
Most members of Congress would love to finish out their terms with a series of CRs. No pesky votes. No accountability. Meanwhile, for the tassled-loafer set, it’s “Let the good times roll.”
It’s disgusting.
You’re right. If there is a “shut down,” the Dems will be the cause but that is not how it will be played by media.
GOP:Honey, our income is short by $100 dollars per day.
Dems and Obama: Okay dear. I will cut back on Starbucks coffee and only go once a day instead of twice a day and this will save us $4.00 every day.
Gop: No dear, you must stop going altogether and this will save us $8.00.
Tea party: WTF? $94 vs $92

The bias already evident on ABC News - even from Jake Tapper, one of their more fair reporters — is already appalling.
Fail to even mention that the RATS refused to pass a budget for the current fiscal year and now have the nerve to blame others.
It’s disgusting.

Important Lesson from 1995 Budget / Fed. Govt. Shutdown - FR - by Richard Kimball - Post #7 (Feb 20) I remember an article after the last shutdown. It was one of the best articles I've ever read, and was about the politics of the shut down, from the perspective of a (fairly) young journalist. Among other things, he noted, the Republicans talk to us like it's a board meeting, like we're the enemy or one of their employees. The Democrats are salespeople. They throw us the spin, but in a self-depreciating way. Sometimes, when they say something, they grin a little, because they know it's BS, and they know we know it's BS, but they're always trying to make the sale. The final line was the most telling, and this one I remember almost verbatim: "At 2 AM, Congress adjourned, no deal in sight. The Republicans went home, and the Democrats went to the fax machines." The Rats won the budget battle after they lost the budget battle because they understood that you have to win the battle for public perception AFTER the fact. 7 posted on Sunday February 20, 08:24:13 GMT-0800 2011 by Richard Kimball ...This is not a war between the rich and the poor. I’m one of them, and while I see the abuses that go on in the US government, I live from paycheck to paycheck because the job does not pay me enough life “high on the hog” as many government employees are accused of.
The little people will be hurt. Don’t forget that. - #124 - by ducttape45
** Important Response to ducttape45 and ALL: - Months ago I heard it from Levin: ... ~ if there’s a shutdown, the Dems are threatening us that some people or a lot of people will be in the soup-lines. Levin says, ~
If we don’t cut the spending / deficit / debt, and the economy crashes; WE ARE *ALL* Going To Be In The SOUP-LINE!! ~
can’t they wait til after monday? it took over a year (and a call to my congressman who sits on the DHS oversight subcommittee)for me to get the green card interview set up for my wife this coming monday!
each week I would pass another continuation with ONE thing being cut.
week one, continuation with all funding cut for abortion.
week two, continuation with all funding cut for ____
and keep doing that, and daring the President to shut the government down over ONE cut to ONE liberal program.
