An armed security guard, hired by Apple to protect one of its San Diego stores, confronted and killed a smash and grab suspect in a gun battle early Monday.
One person is dead and two people have been taken into custody following the shooting at Otay Ranch Towne Center in the Eastlake section of Chula Vista according to police.
The Apple store manager was working inside when just before 7 a.m. the guard confronted two men and a woman. The suspects had smashed into the store's front doors, sending shattered glass out onto the sidewalk. The guard told police a gun battle started when one suspect produced a handgun. More than a dozen yellow evidence markers were on the ground just outside the store's front door.
Investigators said the three suspects got into a silver Acura and crashed into a light pole and a post before stopping on the curb outside Banana Republic. The passenger side door was left open with what appeared to be a body still inside.
Police confirm the unidentified man was shot and killed by the security guard. The second man and woman ran from the mall heading east, police said.
Patrol cars blocked the intersection of Eastlake Parkway and Birch Road leading into the outdoor mall. Chula Vista police officers, U.S. Border Patrol agents and San Diego County sheriff's deputies searched the neighborhood near the mall.
Around 8 a.m., law enforcement officers with guns drawn approached a section of townhomes in the Winding Walk community east of the shopping center.
Officers entered an alley between two buildings and pulled out two people. A female was cuffed and walked to a patrol car. The second, a man, was originally cuffed and patted down. Then, he was treated by medical personnel for a gunshot wound in the buttocks before being taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
The suspects were positively identified by Apple store employees, according to Chula Vista police.
The Apple store security guard was not injured, police said. Eastlake High School, Wolf Canyon Elementary School, Veterans Elementary School and Olympian High School were placed on lockdown according to district officials. Those lockdowns were lifted by 9:30 a.m. Mater Dei Catholic High School, first reported to be on lockdown, reported that it was back in session as well.
The surviving perps will not be charged with murder. However, on the bright side, they have a heck of a good civil suit against the store. The event occurred in California where the states judiciary notoriously favors the criminal element of Calfornia society.
Probably not the kind of Apple related news you’re interested in, but I thought I’d ping you just in case you are interested in this story.

I WANT ONE!
Otay Ranch, unfortunately, has fallen victim to the brilliant liberal idea that low-income housing should be constructed alongside half a million dollar homes.
I'm of the firm belief that low income housing needs to be everywhere.
Let me expand on that. It shouldn't be anywhere, that is government shouldn't be paying anyone's rent.
However, if it's going to exist, it has to be everywhere, or those in excluded areas are never going to have a reason to oppose it. If all the low income housing is in Brooklyn, then Manhattan is going to keep voting for it.
I kinda of want an I-Pad2 as well, but damn....

My son was living in an Eastlake condo in 2008
when a guy was murdered 100 ft from his front
door. A case of mistaken identity, but the victim
is still dead. I relocated my son to my 2nd house
in Pocatello, ID within a week of that event. My
son knew the victim. It is possible that he was
coming to visit my son. Too close for comfort.
Thailand?
What do you know, there IS an app for that:
Tactical NAV iPhone app used to help destroy Taliban fighting position
Kunar Province, Afghanistan Tactical NAV, a military-grade iPhone app created by U.S. Army Capt. Jonathan J. Springer, a battalion fire support officer with the 101st Airborne Division, has successfully been used in combat to help destroy a Taliban fighting position in eastern Afghanistans Kunar Province near the Pakistan border.
...SNIP...
This is exactly why I created Tactical NAV, said Springer, who is still deployed to Afghanistan with the 101st Airborne. I set out to create an inexpensive and accurate tool for the Warfighter engaged in the fight, and Im happy to report that it works as described.
Device Requirements:
* iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad
* Requires iOS 4.2 or later
* 5.1 MB
Pricing and Availability:
Tactical NAV 1.1 has been on sale since February for only $5.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Navigation category.

There are a lot of rich Mexican with visas who live in that area because they want to avoid kidnapping. There probably are a lot of rich Mexican narcotrafficantes living in the upscale sections of Chula Vista as well. Lots of black SUV’s.
Oh my, that was my first thought when I read where this happened.
