UN helicopters have fired on a camp of forces loyal to Ivory Coast's incumbent leader Laurent Gbagbo as his opponent's fighters launched a new offensive on the main city, Abidjan.
Loud explosions have been heard as fighters backing internationally recognised President Alassane Ouattara move towards the presidential palace.
France has authorised its forces to join the UN in protecting civilians.
Reports from Abidjan say several people have been kidnapped.
The group, including two French nationals, were seized by "armed men" from the Novotel hotel, the French foreign ministry told the AFP news agency.
Heavy weapons
A UN official told the BBC that UN attack helicopters had fired missiles at heavy weapons in a pro-Gbagbo military camp.
He said the operation was aimed at preventing use of the weapons, which have been deployed against both UN personnel and Ivory Coast civilians in recent days.
The official said the decision to go ahead with the operation was made in light of the mission's mandate to protect civilians.
Earlier, the UN chief's representative accused pro-Gbagbo forces of "mindless" attacks on the UN base in Abidjan.
Eleven peacekeepers have been shot in recent days.
Choi Young-jin, special representative of the UN Secretary General in Ivory Coast, told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme: "We are fast approaching a tipping point.

“The official said the decision to go ahead with the operation was made in light of the mission's mandate to protect civilians.”
The UN could “protect citizens” anywhere in the world.

The French are really starting to flex their military muscle lately. They also are conducting operations in Afghanistan, Africa, and in Libya. I think the French are going to try to step up to the plate and fill the void of military dominance that the US and British have filled for years and is slowly fading away.

How many people reading the MSM are aware that the Ivory Coast massacre was by Muslims against Catholics?
3 April 2011
I found this via Gateway Pundit:
Bumped: MUSLIM TROOPS SLAUGHTER 1,000 CATHOLICS IN IVORY COAST
Posted by Jim Hoft on Sunday, April 3, 2011, 10:22 PM
(UPDATED & BUMPED)
At least 1,000 Christians were slaughtered this week in at the Salesian Saint Teresa of the Child Jesus mission in Duekou, Ivory Coast by Muslim troops loyal to Alassane Ouattara. The state-run media has been slow to report the facts.
[...]
UPDATE: The Muslim troops slaughtered several hundred Catholics at at the sprawling Salesian Saint Teresa of the Child Jesus mission in Duekou.
Herald Scotland reported:
A massacre in a Roman Catholic mission compound in the heart of the Ivory Coasts cocoa-producing region could come to be seen as a crucial moment in the West African states escalating civil war.
Reports are mounting of atrocities by both sides in the conflict ? those loyal to head of state Laurent Gbagbo, besieged in his presidential residence in Abidjan, Ivory Coasts commercial capital, and those who follow northern leader and president-elect Allasane Ouattara.
Events at the Italian Salesian Roman Catholic mission in Duekoue increasingly echo a notorious church massacre during the Rwandan genocide in 1994.
Early reports suggested that more than 800 people, largely from the Gbagbo-supporting Gueré tribe, were killed in a single day at the sprawling Salesian Saint Teresa of the Child Jesus mission in Duekoue, 300 miles west of Abidjan towards the Liberian border. The attackers seem to have been largely soldiers descended from Burkina Faso immigrant Muslim families loyal to Ouattara.
Late yesterday the Roman Catholic charity Caritas said more than 1000 people were massacred in Duekoue. A Caritas spokesman said Caritas workers visited the town and reported seeing a neighbourhood filled with bodies of people who had been shot and hacked to death with machetes.
More at Libertarian Republican.
I hope there is more reporting about Ivory Coast and what is going on there.
Do any of you readers have links to solid reports?

All I heard was that the Catholic Charity had reported the killings but there was no mention of the religion of those killed.

U.N.: Elected Christian leader must be ousted for Muslim
The "Christian" leader whose term was up in 2005 but, as a result of rebel activities, managed to keep getting elections postponed year by year until he was finally defeated in the 2010 election and has refused to vacate the office.

And nary a peep from him about the Ivorian constitutional prohibition for a president serving more than 10 years.

"UN official told the BBC that UN attack helicopters..." I didn't know the UN had their own attack helicopters.
