Obama administration retreats (again) on Khalid Sheikh Mohammed civilian trial

Buzz out of Washington this morning is that the Obama administration has signaled it will end efforts to try 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in a civilian trial and instead will use the Gitmo military tribunal system pursued by, yes, George W. Bush.

AG Eric Holder is reportedly holding a 2pm Eastern press conference.

Here’s a blurb from CBS:

Attorney General Eric Holder today will announce that self-proclaimed Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammad will be tried in a military commission, CBS News has learned. A source says the commission will be held at the Guantanamo Bay prison.

Trying Mohammed in a civilian court and closing the Guantanamo prison were once some of the Obama administration’s top priorities, but political realities have hamstrung both goals.

Holder previously recommended that Mohammed and four other alleged Sept. 11 plotters be tried in New York City, but he scrapped that plan in the wake of public consternation.

I’m still disappointed that they couldn’t find a town they could bribe to hold the trials.

Why didn’t they make an offer to some impoverished small town?

What exactly is he going to campaign on in 2012? I could have sworn closing Gitmo was one of the cornerstones of his 2008 campaign.

It’s an obvious flip flop. I guess the good news is, though, that he’s not too stupid to learn. It’s just too bad he’s so stupid it takes him 2 years in office, and that he will not be held accountable for all of his flip flops and childish cockiness during his last campaign for president.

"I could have sworn closing Gitmo was one of the cornerstones of his 2008 campaign."

You fail to understand the liberal mindset. Whether or not Gitmo was actually closed is irrelevant; the important thing to a liberal is that Obama promised to close Gitmo. He will not lose a single vote because he failed to shut it down. Not a single true-believer will switch his/her vote to the GOP because Obama didn't keep a promise. Obama knows the members of his base are a bunch of chumps with the attention spans of two year olds. They are as easily duped time and again as a cat chasing a laser pointer.

He wants people to forget about 9/11.

Having a public trial would serve to remind them, and there would be protests by the Islamists, and death threats to and assination attempts against the judge, the prosecution, and the jury members if they can be identified, should he be found guilty.

Makes no sense. The killer already pled guilty.
