By checking 'black' as his race on the census form, President Obama is at odds with clear demographic trends toward multiracial pride. The number of Americans identifying as both white and black jumped 134% in 10 years. It could have been a historic teaching moment. Instead, President Obama, the most famous mixed-race person in the world, checked off only one race black last year on his census form. And in so doing, he missed an opportunity to articulate a more nuanced racial vision for the increasingly diverse country he heads.
The president also bucked a trend. Last month, the Census Bureau announced that the number of Americans who identified themselves as being of more than one race in 2010 grew about 32% over the last decade. The number of people who identified as both white and black jumped an astounding 134%. And nearly 50% more children were identified as multiracial on this census, making that category the fastest-growing youth demographic in the country.
To be sure, the number of people 9 million, or 2.9% of the population who identified themselves as of more than one race on their census form is still small. But the trend is clear.
It has been only since 2000 that the federal government allowed Americans to identify themselves as of more than one race, and the change was one more step away from the sordid days when racial mixing was frowned on and even criminalized in much of the country. The increase in the number of Americans who now identify as racially mixed suggests not only an increase in absolute numbers, but also that people are growing more comfortable with the idea of racial mixing.

Votes. That is all it was about.....
Children rarely come up with racial hatreds on their own. They almost always have to be taught.
Given his mother’s politics— not to mention her choice of sexual partners— I daresay that white (self-)loathing was fully ingrained in little Barry long before he filled out any census.
‘I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother’s race.’ ...This tells us a lot about his feelings towards his White side.’
Well, she WAS a typical white woman....
too bad POS wasn’t an option -
Yeah, I'd be curious to know how many people checked the "multi-racial" box in order to take advantage of some set asides or get a leg up on a job application or something along those lines. There have been times that I've been tempted in this rotten 0bama job market to check "White Hispanic" on a job app, and then let them prove that I'm not at least on my mother's side.
It's all about his half-ass politics.
He is clearly only “proud” of his black side. Plus Moochelle would beat him up if he picked white.
As far as i can tell, the sole purpose of this article was to make the reader dumber.
The bigger story here is that he has finally released a government record on himself.
"Mulatto" is half-Caucasian, half-Negro.
Looking at The Won's genetic background, he's a lot closer to half-Caucasian, half-Arab.
P.S. - That’s probably what his birth certificate says, and that’s why he won’t release it.
A jump in biracial responses could also be becuse this year’s cencus was far more invasive.
As far as I can see, the Constitution justifies a census for representation reasons. But the census is a tool to determine what areas are more special than others, which ones need more of my money and so on.
There are lots of white Mexicans. So I am atleast half Hispanic. That single hispanic with no kids and 6 figure income must have skewed their curve a little.
