We're shopping around for our various picks of herbs and some vegetables this year. Tomatoes and ocra will be first on the list for veggies. They can best withstand the desert heat out here.
Basil, mint, rosemary and oregano seem to do very well even in direct sunlight, once you nurse some of them through the initial shock of exposure.

I don't know about the church in question, but there remain to this day a few good churches hanging on within the TEC.
