Exposed: The US-Saudi Libya deal
Asia Times Online ^ | Apr 2, 2011 | Pepe Escobar

Posted on 04/01/2011 3:03:39 PM PDT by FredDardick

This, in short, is the essence of a deal struck between the Barack Obama administration and the House of Saud. Two diplomatic sources at the United Nations independently confirmed that Washington, via Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, gave the go-ahead for Saudi Arabia to invade Bahrain and crush the pro-democracy movement in their neighbor in exchange for a "yes" vote by the Arab League for a no-fly zone over Libya - the main rationale that led to United Nations Security Council resolution 1973.

The revelation came from two different diplomats, a European and a member of the BRIC group, and was made separately to a US scholar and Asia Times Online. According to diplomatic protocol, their names cannot be disclosed. One of the diplomats said, "This is the reason why we could not support resolution 1973. We were arguing that Libya, Bahrain and Yemen were similar cases, and calling for a fact-finding mission. We maintain our official position that the resolution is not clear, and may be interpreted in a belligerent manner."

As Asia Times Online has reported, a full Arab League endorsement of a no-fly zone is a myth. Of the 22 full members, only 11 were present at the voting. Six of them were Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members, the US-supported club of Gulf kingdoms/sheikhdoms, of which Saudi Arabia is the top dog. Syria and Algeria were against it. Saudi Arabia only had to "seduce" three other members to get the vote.

Translation: only nine out of 22 members of the Arab League voted for the no-fly zone. The vote was essentially a House of Saud-led operation, with Arab League secretary general Amr Moussa keen to polish his CV with Washington with an eye to become the next Egyptian President.

In other words the entire region is beset with a Sunni-Shia civil war. But Al Qaeda are radical Sunni and they would never side with Shia Iran. Says who? The media? And you believe them? Radical Sunnis are besot with whomever will provide them with protection and intelligence and expertise. Iran is the kingpin behind Al Qaeda, rest assured.

Remember, Al Qaeda hates the Saudi Royal family. Now who in the world would stand to gain the most by empowering Al Qaeda? Doh. Russia of course is lined up behind Iran, so you know where Iran gets it’s intelligence about us.

Iran was behind 9-11. Those Shia hate us with the heat of a thousands suns. They knew after Bush won the election we would be invading Iraq and they tried to pre-empt it with 9-11-01. This was after it was leaked we would create a protectorate of Iraq and the Iraqi oil fields as spelled out in the the Cheney led secret energy task force meetings. The theory is the task force recommended taking over Iraq in order to block an Iranian styled people’s Islamic Revolution there. So the US concocted WMD and Iraq invasion. 9-11 was an attempt to get us tied down in Afghanistan and perhaps lose the political ability to do the Iraq war. To Bush’s immense credit and owing to the skill and dedication of US armed forces, we were able to successfully execute both wars simulataneously.

Now Iran and Al Qaeda are going for the weaker bricks in the Arab wall. Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Bahrain actions prove it. We are actively engaged in trying to steer the Sunni/Shia crisis in our favor. Crushing Bahrain’s popular uprising was huge for us and a big plus in our column. Iran sees Bahrain as it’s wayward state. They tried to take it and failed.

Bahrain hosts a U.S. Navy base and is a vital ingress and egress asset for U.S. personnel, supplies and equipment.

Objectively speaking, it would be EXTREMELY unwise for it to be relinquished to the loonies.

But I’m all for a pro-western government assuming control of oil-rich Eastern Libya.

I would be too, but Obama's plan seems to be to let Al Qaeda take control there, I assume to help them finance their expansion.

Thanks. Just realized that I forgot to watch O’Reilly tonight. Hope he didn’t have more of Trump on and I missed it.

Hurricane Opal. I never heard about that, but then the Internet was really just getting going as an alternative source for news. It hit us pretty good here in Atlanta, lots of power outages, some multi-day.

If you use a light spray of vinegar you can clear the flies away from those african children and create a “no fly zone”.

This story has real problems and Escobar is a famous America hater. There was certainly no quid pro quo that anyone at the UN's gossip festival would know about.

Everything that has happened has plenty of other drivers.
