Tax the Super Rich now or face a revolution
Market Watch ^ | March 29, 2011 | Paul B. Farrell

Yes, tax the Super Rich. Tax them now. Before the other 99% rise up, trigger a new American Revolution, a meltdown and the Great Depression 2.

We know the Super Rich don’t care. Not about you. Nor the American public. They can’t see. Can’t hear. Stay trapped in their Forbes-400 bubble. An echo chamber that isolates them. They see the public as faceless workers, customers, taxpayers. See GOP power on the ascent. Reaganomics is back. Unions on the run. Clueless masses are easily manipulated.

Even Obama is secretly working with the GOP, will never touch his Super Rich donors. Yes, the Super-Rich Delusion is that powerful, infecting all America.

Here’s how one savvy insider who knows described this Super-Rich Delusion: “The top 1% live privileged lives, aren’t worried about much. Families vacation at the best resorts. Their big concerns are finding the best Pilates teacher, best masseuse, best surgeons, best private schools. They aren’t concerned with the underlying deterioration of America or the world, except in the abstract, because they aren’t directly affected by it. That’s not to say they aren’t sympathetic, aware, or don’t talk about the issues you bring up. They are largely concerned with protecting and enhancing their socio-economic positions, ensuring their families live well. And nothing you write about will change things.”

Yeppers, that's it! The U.S.A. is the only country in the world where the rich are on top.

Two things here, skippy:

1.) Here's the Class Envy Board.

2.) You're a moron.

They pay their fair share...just like the tax code is designed to do...but that is the real problem...the tax code.

It needs to be simplified and either a flat tax or consumption tax needs to be put in place.

Then and only then will everyone pay their fair share.

The herd has already been culled through abortion. As the Baby Boom Generation moves into the here-after, Mother Nature will cull more of the herd. I would not take joy in any culling. Abortion is on top of my list. And it is #6 in God's list that says, "Thou shalt not kill." Such is a myopic fantasy which thinks that less people makes more unicorns to ride. However, there is the problem of less wealth to feed the unicorns.

One of those also is "thou shalt not steal", but we have an entire political party that believes that stealing is fine. As long as they steal from "the rich".

One needs to think in terms of the value of the individual human being and not live in the fantasy world of the unicorn farm. Our Christian heritage puts value on each human being. And in step with Christian thinking, each human being also has value in the Capitalist system. Each participates in the generation of new wealth which builds the technology for a better life.

In the real world, there are no unicorns, but real humans dependent upon a system that delivers all the needs of their mortal existence. The Capitalist free market system is the only system that can do it.

When government takes away wealth that has been generated by human innovation, it is another type of culling. Done in a proper way--by the Constitution--this culling can be a necessary sacrifice. Done excessively, this type of culling kills the economic benefits of innovation, it discourages human ingenuity and it encourages the nonproductive dependence on the wealth it takes. In a myopic way it kills the human spirit to create a better life for human beings. And the genie of Capitalism is culled from the herd.

Oh, I agree. Perhaps I was a little harsh in my desire to "cull the herd". And I certainly wasn't as clear as I could be about what herd I was referring to. I am not inclined to join the revolution against the wealthy - I rather hope to be wealthy myself some day. Rather, I was inclined to allow the freeloaders to rise up in anger so that they can be smacked back down.

I don't subscribe to the continuation of the "tax the rich" mindset. In fact, I support a totally flat tax rate with NO deductions, no credits, and no adjustments of any kind. That's the ONLY fair way to tax income.

That has been what CR has been talking about for this whole thread.

I confess I didn't read the thread. But his initial post set me off by sounding liberal (or at least populist).

I know it sounded that way at first, but you must be aware that many super rich don’t pay taxes at all. The trick is getting them to pay taxes, period.

It is those less than super rich who bleed.

Only once in my life did I ever make a bit over $50,000 and that was due to overtime. I worked my fanny off and what did I have to show for it - I ended up paying about 58% of my income in taxes!

That included ALL taxes. I lived in Oregon at the time and because I was single and a renter, I had to file a 1040ez form. I added up all the taxes from city, county, state and federal - even gasoline taxes - and the amount was sickening.

“I outlined corrupt/illegal actions that the super rich *routinely* use to escape paying the tax rate. That is what I meant by “fair share”, whatever the tax rate is! I am in favor of a flat tax.”

“Some of you are so clueless as to what is happening it’s shocking. The global cabal of bankers and super rich who are setting up the New World Order.”

ChristusRex stated this at #46.

You and he are on the same wave length!

The Super Rich don’t have enough wealth to pay our debt. End of story.

last i checked, the government is spending $4-5 trillion each year.

all the money from all the rich is about half that. once you steal it... what are you going to do next year? no companies will have been started with that money. actually, companies would shutdown and unemployment would increase. brilliant! (there’s a reason people like this are never tapped to head up corporations)

why aren’t they demanding the government stop stealing money from people and businesses? it’s only being used to secure power for the corrupt asshats in washdc.

force washington to stop taxing people, leaving more money in the hands of the people... which will then spur the economy in consumer spending and entrepreneurial efforts

of course, that means people would have to work for the money... and not just get a hand out from the fedgov.

I am not a socialist you blithering idiot. It’s a shame your reading comprehension .... yadda yadda yadda

That's pretty funny, given that you are obviously a socialist that looks to take from producers and give to moochers. If that's not socialist, what is?

...the super rich need to pay more of their share.

Huh?

The 1% "rich" are already paying something like 6000% of their "share", while 50% of Americans pay ZERO PERCENT of their share.

How about taking this Marxist drivel down the road?

“They hire the best lawyers and financial advisers who are experts in hiding their wealth, defraying taxes incurred, stashing assets in offshore banks, incorporating outside the US in tax shelters...”

Is what they do illegal? If not, then they are using every advantage LEGALLY ABAILABLE TO THEM to reduce their tax burden.

If you believe they are not paying their “fair share” like the liberals like to say, then the problem is not the super-rich, but the US Tax law.

Simplicity is what is needed in the tax law so that everyone pays an equal share and no one escapes with paying nothing (e.g. a straight 5% income tax or a 10% national sales tax - no deductions for anything).

Youth unemployment in the USA is a result of democrat policies. Raising the minimum wage, ObamaCare. Lowering the minimum wage would allow startups to hire 2 unskilled workers instead of 1, and maybe one of them will be eager to learn a trade. Democrat’s over-regulation is a means to an end, which is the destruction of the capitalist system and the end of the American dream.

but I strongly agree that the super rich need to pay more of their share.

The big practical issue here (which is being largely overlooked) is that despite their great wealth, in the day of $1 Trillion + budget deficits running multiple consecutive years, the "super rich" don't have enough $$$ to make a significant dent in the deficit. Let alone the debt.

Forget jacking up tax rates. Lets talk outright confiscation. How much are Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Steve Jobs, Paul Allen, etc worth in total? If the gvt takes away ALL their wealth and property, and is able to make it liquid for whatever the face value is (yeah right, not going to happen. Just watch what happens to Microsoft stock when Bill Gates' holdings hit the market at the same time) we're only talking about a couple hundred billion $$$. Seems large to you and me, but relative to the Federal deficit? MAYBE 20%? And then only for a single year.

The ONLY ways that the deficit and debt problems can be handled are to either massively restructure (as in downsize) government to bring it under control and qllo2 the cutting of taxes to spur private sector growth ... or tax the living hell out of the Middle Class - which is where the preponderance of the wealth in this country really is - which would destroy private sector growth.

Don’t take this as an attack upon you. I more or less agree with your premise - that our government has evolved into a cynical colony of parasitic political careerists whose principal aim is to enrich themselves and their friends by dispensing “special favors” to those who have learned how to game the DC system and wealthy enough to grease the right palms.

However, I do have to agree they can be sneaky in not paying what law prescribes.

They actually use the law to protect their assets from other laws. There's nothing unusual about this or immoral. It is the government sucking down huge amounts of money and borrowing even more to fund schemes of leftists and other statists wanting to retrofit the culture that is immoral. Pointing at the "super rich" is a standard tool of leftists to stir envy for their cause and to distract the masses from paying attention to the fact that the government has far more severe effects on their lives and livelihood than any "super rich" ever had or ever will.
