Nearly a year before the Republican primary for the 2012 U.S. Senate race, Lt. Gov. John Sanchez fought for the support of Tea Party members in Moriarty on Sunday.
In front of around 100 Tea Party faithful on Sunday afternoon, Sanchez sounded like a man with a plan to run for the Senate.
If we do, were in it to win it clearly, Sanchez said.
Sanchez said nothing is for certain yet, but if he jumps into the 2012 Senate race, the difference between himself and other candidates will be easy to see.

I don’t know what to think about a Sanchez run. He ran for Governor in 2002 and lost by a record-breaking margin. Is he better-known and more popular now?
I doubt it. He's only 90 days into the Lt. Gov. position and the perception of his abandoning that post so soon (even if he does not resign) leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Heather Wilson has already thrown her hat into the race and if a Hispanic candidate is to run in the primary, I would rather see Jon Barela who lost the District 1 race to eco-radical Martin Heinrich. Bottom line is that we (Pubbies) must win back one of the senate seats lost when Pete Domenici retired in 2008, and must avoid a repeat of the politically and financially draining 2008 primary.

John Dendahl broke the record 4 years later.
Richardson was popular then.
Oh, I missed that. I agree with Cedar Dave, that we need to avoid a messy primary like we had in 2008. Heather Wilson is acceptable, although she’s nothing spectacular.
I agree with you about abandoning the Lt. Gov. post so quickly. I called his office and left a message saying he’d better think twice because many people would be very upset that they donated $$$ and volunteered time to help him win the post he’s in and now he’s running for something else.
I also thought the forum he chose to do it and the things he chose to say showed that he wants to get nasty, as if he thinks that is what it will take to win. I for one, am tired of politicians that say nasty things about their opponents. Tell me what you can do and why we should believe you. Do not smear your opponent and drag them through the mud.
I hope he doesn’t run but I think he’s already made up his mind. Also, I heard that he and Martinez are not happy with each other - more on her side is what I’m hearing. I don’t know how he feels about her but I think she’s disappointed in him. So maybe he figures he just will use her as a stepping stone. I think he rode her coattails to office. I do not believe he could have done it on his own. As for name recognition, there’s not a lot.
Barela is going for the winnable open House seat instead. Probably better for now.
I agree, Barela needs to take district 1.
I don’t think Sanchez can take the senate.
