Abbas met with his rivals in the Hamas militant group over the weekend in an attempt to end nearly four years of infighting that has complicated the quest for a Palestinian state.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is making a heavy push for reconciliation with Hamas and is willing to give up hundreds of millions of dollars in U.S. aid if that's what it takes to forge a Palestinian unity deal, his adviser said on Monday.

Azzam Ahmed's remarks could indicate that Abbas would also give up on renewing stalled peace talks with Israel and prefers to pursue unity with Gaza's Hamas rulers in a push toward independence.

Abbas' Fatah movement has been divided from its rival Hamas since the later overran the Gaza Strip in 2007, expelling forces loyal to the Palestinian Authority.

This scenario is precisely what Caroline Glick was talking about in her long essay last week: Islamists in PA are not taking credit for the bus bombing in Jerusalem so that the event does not tarnish the ongoing plan to unite Hamas and Fatah. See:

One of Hussein’s first acts was to authorize $900M for the Hamas controlled Gaza strip. So it really doesn’t matter if Abbas gives up US aid.
