WASHINGTON The percentage of the nations black population living in the South has hit its highest point in half a century, according to census data released Thursday, as younger and more educated black residents move out of declining cities in the Northeast and Midwest in search of better opportunities.
The Rev. Ronald Peters, above, who moved last year from Pittsburgh to Atlanta, said the black middle class was more hopeful in the South than in the Northeast.
The share of black population growth that has occurred in the South over the past decade the highest since 1910, before the Great Migration of blacks to the North has upended some long-held assumptions.
Both Michigan and Illinois, whose cities have rich black cultural traditions, showed an overall loss of blacks for the first time, said William Frey, the chief demographer at the Brookings Institution.
And Atlanta, for the first time, has replaced Chicago as the metro area with the largest number of African-Americans after New York. About 17 percent of blacks who moved to the South in the past decade left New York State, far more than from any other state, the census data show.
At the same time, blacks have begun leaving cities for more affluent suburbs in large numbers, much like generations of whites before them.
The notion of the North and its cities as the promised land has been a powerful part of African-American life, culture and history, and now it all seems to be passing by, said Clement Price, a professor of history at Rutgers-Newark. The black urban experience has essentially lost its appeal with blacks in America.

This is the decade of black flight, said Mr. Frey. Its a new age for African-Americans. Its long overdue, but it seems to be happening.

Furthermore, the redistricting will be done by state legislatures which are now more Republican on the whole than they were in the last redistricting 10 years ago.
Here in Michigan the GOP holds all the marbles and John Conyers district was the big loser.
Exactly, rural Michigan is probably the most “Southern” of any place north of the Mason-Dixon Line.
Yep. I grew up chasing a blue tic hound through the woods after coons.
Blacks might get quickly cured of their addiction in the South, because their love of Dems might be more based on living in blighted but densely populated coastal urban areas, than on the Dems’ questionable benefits to blacks per se. If you live in Detroit and there are no jobs, then food stamps, welfare, WIC, unemployment, rent subsidies, etc., are a lifeline, and you fear whites because you never meet any. If you live in Greensboro, NC, whites are your neighbors, their dialect is not dissimilar to your own, and it’s easier to start your own business, and thus resent high taxes. If you live in a rural area, gun control laws seem idiotic nuisances. If you live in Detroit, guns seem a dangerous menace, and you wish there was some way of getting rid of them. And so on and so forth.
Anyone who thinks that the North is less racist than the South, should remember the riots over school bussing in Boston in the 70s. Liberal northerners love blacks as long as they don’t have them for neighbors, or have one of them dating their daughter.
These days, I’d say it’s the opposite. The North has grown more racist, the klan more widespread there. I remember the Boston bussing conflicts well, even so.
I heard a suburban preacher once who suggested that in the interest of "justice" we should all send our kids to innercity schools--level the playing field you might say. I told him "you go first." That ended that little discussion. All these black families would want is the best for their children, just as I have.
In the future, the emergence of solid black elected Republican officials in the South, such as the two new black congressmen, might help change things.
All the way to Louisianna....where they dish out the dough to almost the entire population
Didn’t you hear? The plan is to bring in immigrants who can buy the empty houses on the cheap. Of course they don’t say where they’re going to work. I guess they’ll all mow each other’s lawns.
Good; let them assimilate into those Red States and dilute their voting power because we all know that Blacks went for Obama 95%. Never could understand how they can go to church on Sunday; sing, clap, shout, dance and then go into a voting booth on Tuesday and vote for a man who espouses gay marriage and killing little babies.
Thanks for the ping!
Perhaps it won’t happen so quickly as I would hope. You’re right. But with a change of geography, the immediate realities of life for blacks will also change, and this will in time cause a change in voting patterns, just as the great Northward movement eventually estranged blacks from their traditional Republican roots, as the Republican Party itself changed from a protectionist and “progressive” party to what it is today. Just as blacks “turned Mr. Lincoln’s picture to the wall in the 1930s,” they’ll also do the same for Humphry, Kennedy, and Clinton. Obama, however, is another story. He has to leave office as a complete and undeniable disgrace. If there’s any doubt as to his being discredited, blacks will view him as a scapegoat being unfairly picked on by “whitey” on account of his pigmentation. So here’s hoping he’s caught in a menage a toit with two other men, at a love nest that was supposed to be a diplomatic summit, the hotel paid for by George Soros, who is one of the two other men.
And all they’ll do is drag they voting habits with them changing wherever they go into wherever they left.
Exactly. Their attitudes and habits won’t change, just their location.
“They want better conditions to raise their children in and they want to live in peaceful neighborhoods where they can walk the street in safety.
The trouble is that they bring the problem with them.
The kids that they bring to better neighborhoods were the problem with the old neighborhood.”
Exactly. They are going ot likely bring the same problems and the same deterioration that caused the problems they left in the first place.
It’s not likely, it’s guaranteed. Proven time after time.
