OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canada's minority Conservative government was defeated in a non-confidence vote on Friday, setting the scene for a federal election in early May.

Legislators in the House of Commons voted by 156-145 to back the motion, which was presented by the main opposition Liberal Party.

What’s this all aboot?

I’m not Canadian but as I understand it, the Conservative government of PM Harper presented a budget with certain austerity cuts in it which the Liberal Party, in conjunction with the far-left NDP, refused to accept. Unlike our system this actually set the wheels in motion whereby the government could fall.

The choice between Harper’s fiscal sanity and Euro-style Socialist spending now goes before the voters, where it appears to be pretty much a crapshoot.

Yeah, is there any connection to them taking over the NATO leadership role (Obama, you magnificiant knucklehead) and this vote of no confidence?

So the Liberal Messiah is such a screw-up that when He intended to overthrow the Libyan government, He ended up causing the overthrow of the Canadian government.

I can't wait for our vote of no confidence in 2012.

Maybe they can get a real majority next time, if Harper doesn’t step on his own toes again by compromising

A poll put out today gives the conservatives a big lead which would likely lead to a majority government if it stays that way until election day. Last time the conservatives dissolved parliament hoping to get a majority but fell just short. This time the opposition brought down the government so it might backfire on them this time. The country isn’t in the mood for an election. This will be a grumpy vote.

It’s all about the liberals, socialists, and seperatists ganging up on the conservatives.

Canada needs a Christian Coalition! They have wide open abortion/homosexuality.

There is no organized Social Conservative Christian coalition of any kind.

Judges are appointed to the Supreme Court with little fanfare.

Re post 14.

Don't count on it. Harper is one of the smartest politicians I have ever seen. BTW, he isn't a lawyer, he is an economist.

The conservatives are rising in the polls. The liberals are let by Michael Ignatief (Iggy to his enemies). Iggy spent the last 25 years teaching at Harvard. He is no Canadian. He is a classic spend and tax liberal and has said so many times for many years on video. The commercials the conservatives will come up with in this campaign will destroy him.

Before I moved to America in 07, I was part of the British Columbia wing of the Harper’s Conservative Party. I just checked my e-mails and the C Party already contacted me to come back and or/donate LOL. Worked closely with the donors who ramped up the money.

That’s the beauty of Canadian elections. Once the current government is defeated in a roll vote, they can call the elections immediately unlike in America. It’s like the GOP asking the Feds for another presidential election because the GOP won Congress. I still remember the anti-American PM’s in Martin and Chretien back to back elections within a span of 1 year.

Canada needs a Christian Coalition! They have wide open abortion/homosexuality.

Maybe the fact is that they are doing better without television hucksters and big haired scam artists.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/canadas-teen-birth-and-abortion-rate-drops-by-369-per-cent/article1581673/ says that:

...Among the four countries compared for 2006, Canada boasted the lowest teen birth and abortion rate per 1,000 women aged 15 to 19 (27.9), followed by Sweden (31.4), England/Wales (60.3), and the United States (61.2)... Canada's rate of teen birth and abortion rate is less than half the US rate without the benefit of Dr. Dobson, thank you kindly.

Judges are appointed to the Supreme Court with little fanfare.

Are they doing any worse than those that come in with great fanfare? The current squatty type masculine liberals come to mind on the US Supreme Court.

I see, I guess I assumed that because he was a minority government he had a power-sharing arrangment. Didn’t he cobble together the disparate conservative-leaning elements to form that government? Will he survive the next vote? Any chance he could be returned with a majority? If he goes down, who is likely to form a new government?

The radical socialist left, Ignatieff,Layton, could not attack the Consrvatives on the economy because Canada`s economy is one of the best performing ones in the OECD. They had to resort to Parliamentary tricks and voted together to find the Conservatives “ in contempt” of Parliament.

It`s not working:

Tories shrug off opposition attacks, surge to 19 point lead

Ipsos Reid poll for Postmedia News has the Tories entering the campaign in majority territory at 43%, almost 20 points ahead of the Liberals, who have fallen back to 24% support

http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2011/03/24/john-ivison-tories-shrug-off-opposition-attacks-surge-to-19-point-lead/

AND

the Achilles heel of the radical socialist Liberal party is two-fold. Ignatieff himself and his own words and the Province of Ontario being run into the ground by another socialist Liberal, Dalton McGuinty

There is no evidence that anything in that Globe Article from 2010 is even true.

Did you read who was behind the survey?

As for Supreme Court Judges in the US? We have 4 pretty solid Judges on the court, more than can be said for the Canadian high court.

Americans that voted for Obama have blood on their hands, thats for sure!

A Christian Coalition is exactly what Canada needs, even though you disagree.
