The Syrian people should follow Egypts lead and the countrys army should empower a revolution, Robert Gates, US secretary of defence, said as thousands marched in a southern city.
Mr Gates made his comments some of the toughest remarks to date by a US official about the rule of Bashar al-Assad, president on a day of further upheaval in the Middle East and beyond.
The White House signalled that it was preparing for a change in power in Yemen, where it has been allied with the government of Ali Abdullah Saleh, president. Officials also said Nato had neared a deal to take over command and control of the military operation in Libya, after a dispute within the alliance.

Awww...I think Hussein’s team really thinks everyone gives a $%^& what they think.
Gallup DOES have a “worldwide” poll out showing how great the “world” thinks Hussein is...of course, his numbers in America and among world leaders stink.
Maybe Hussein and Gates can go community organize in Nepal.
Oh My God.
What are these guys thinking?
The whole Middle East will be up in flames by the time Obama is done, with Iran in charge.

There is clearly an agenda here, and it is getting very frightening to speculate the end game...
Think about it...The “lighting up” of the middle east seems to have started in Tunis at the end of January! “
So you don’t think it is troubling that we have administration officials encouraging revolutions?
‘The Syrian people should follow Egypts lead and the countrys army should empower a revolution, Robert Gates, US secretary of defence, said...’
I think it is very serious and very inappropriate. Interesting how there was not a peep out of any of them in summer of 09 when there was a true democracy uprising in Iran. Hmmm.
Muslim Brothers must be loving this.
I am beginning to wonder if they have a direct line in :(
Muslim Brothers must be loving this.
This time it is actually an Iranian ally that is in trouble instead of a US ally.
So how many middle east countries are on fire since end of January? I have lost count...Let’s see, we have Tunisia, Yemen, Egypt, and now Syria. I feel like I have left some out....
IMHO, the ultimate grand-prize may be Saudi Arabia.
I think it is important to look at the allegiance of the protestors...what seems to be very common is that our administration sides with the most radical islamics—in Egypt’s case, that was the demonstrators, in Iran’s case, it was the established government. In Libya’s case, it would be the radicals. Am I seeing a pattern starting to emerge?
Since when does SECDEF do crazy shit like this?
We don’t have a SECOFF last I checked.
Well put!
Good question?!
???
At a loss for words here.
“Maybe Hussein and Gates can go community organize in Nepal.”
I’m really fond of Nepal, how about the Gobi desert?
Indeed, I was truly stunned when I read the headline.
I am not sure that this has ever been done before?!
But with this bunch, this is twice, first with Egypt and dear leader’s ‘rise up’ comment and now this comment?! Of course we are having a “kinetic” intervention” or whatever they are calling it in Libya as well.
Just stunning :(
Did Gates check with Dinner Jacket first?
