More than 100 protesters have been killed by police gunfire in Deraa, the Syrian city where a recent wave of anti-government protests have taken place, AFP cited human rights activists and witnesses as saying Thursday.
Britain urged Syria to respect its people's right to peaceful protest after reports of many deaths when security forces cleared a mosque in Deraa. "We call on the government of Syria to respect their people's right to peaceful protest and to take action about their legitimate grievances," British Foreign Secretary William Hague said.
The main hospital in the Syrian city of Deraa has received the bodies of at least 25 protesters who died in confrontations with security forces, a hospital official said on Thursday.
"We received them at 5 p.m. yesterday. They all had bullet holes," the official told Reuters.

Get the Dutch Air Force on the job! Now. Tora Tora Tora!
Syria is a greater threat to U.S. interests than Libya. Syria exports terrorism.
American Obama Media Blackout?
Give them a day or two and McCain and Graham and Palin will be calling for a no-fly zone over Syria as well.
Anderson Cooper is not, I repeat, not, on his way to Damascus.
He better hurry. How bout all the network anchors? Amanpoor? etc. are they on it?
Oh man, you've done it now, LOL!
I believe I heard that this lame ass, idiot-ridden administration was planning to go to the UN to ask for a resolution allowing for a no-fly zone over Syria...... /s =.=
Will this be Obama’s next....... Static Drive-by Shooting event?
Almost too much of a coincidence but then... there's not too many groups out there that have the ability to carry out simultaneous actions on different targets in different countries.
Syria is Disneyland for terrorism
But still, as with Libya, who is the opposition?
Syrians are Baathists, just like Saddam was, so they are no pals of Iran, or Al-Qaeda.
Presumably it is Syrian citizens calling for democracy as it is in Libya and was in Egypt. In all three there is the danger that militant Islamists or Al Quaida will hijack the movement. In all three, there is the danger that the people themselves are militant Islamists and will elect leaders supporting those goals.
In Egypt you had a dictator that was increasingly out of touch and had allowed corruption to become rampant. But he was allied with the West. And polls say 70% of the Egyptian people want war with Israel. Already we've seen greater persecution of Christians since the regime change in Egypt. So what's the lesser evil? I don't know. I may be underestimating the power of democracy to change Egyptian's attitudes but I suspect we are going to miss Mubarak being a buffer.
My impression is that Qadafi has stayed out of trouble since Reagan bombed him. We have a choice between a Dictator that has stayed out of trouble and a Democracy made up of people who may or may not want war with Israel. I'm not sure if Libyans share the Egyptian's views or not.
In Syria you have a dictator that has clearly supported terrorism. And I'm not sure how their people feel about war. But I'm guessing that things won't be worse under a new guy, whoever he is.

//////////
except saddam was a sunni bathist in a predominantly shia country while bashir assad is a shia bathist in a predominantly sunni country.
big difference
(means the syrians side with the iranians and the hez. religion trumps political paty here.)
(took me about a decade to learn to learn that.)

Yah, we’ve got to help Libya right now, stop the government there from hurting its people. Complete silence from the world elite, USA, UN and certainly the media. The obvious fraud of them all is clear to all but the kool aid drinkers, the tares growing up all around us.
Good analysis.
