Here's your eye-popping statistic of the day, courtesy Stephen Losey at Federal Times:
Does job performance play a factor in employee raises and step increases?
Unions defending the General Schedule say yes.
But the latest numbers say clearly no.
Only 737 out of more than 1.2 million GS employees or one in every 1,698 were denied a regularly scheduled step increase and accompanying raise in 2009 because of poor performance, according to data provided by the Office of Personnel Management at Federal Times' request.
That equates to a 0.06 percent denial rate, which is far lower than any estimates given of how many poor performers exist in the work force. OPM estimated in 1999 that poor performers make up approximately 3.7 percent of the federal work force. A 2000 survey by the Merit Systems Protection Board found that 14.3 percent of federal employees were judged by co-workers to be performing below reasonably expected levels.

The list, ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
And I would be that if you investigated those 737 denied raises, they are probably those who under major indictment, or charged with rape, murder, or something equally as serious.
Wow!!! Now that just goes to show you that THE HIGHEST caliber, highest performing, highest level of selfless service in the entire country can be found in the public sector!!! More amazing than even these statistics is that evidently I have personally come in contact with the majority of the 737 poor performers in the few Govt. offices that I visit on a regular basis...what are the odds of that?!?!!??
were denied a regularly scheduled step increase
You better have a dang good reason to stop a regularly scheduled raise which is only once every two years. Normally it is only a couple hundred dollars anyway and by the time you take out taxes, they might end up with 30 bucks a pay check. Let’s not act like they are getting 10 million like the CEOs of big corporations are getting even with the layoffs (which I guess they do so they get the big bonus’).
Or dead themselves. Nope. Never mind. Dead would probably be treated as a disability and therefore points awarded and a raise given.
Wow! How bad were those 737 that they couldn’t even get a government raise!

ROTFLMAO. Now that was funny and pretty accurate.
Or they all listen to Rush Limbaugh.
Middle aged male melanin deficient.
no wonder they are paid so much. They are all top performers
Why, those happen to be the 737 confirmed conservatives in the workforce!
Oh, but let’s act like we are all making millions of dollars are all nothing but a bunch of lazy, malcontents who are bilking tax-payers every year. It is more fun to lump all Fed Employees in the same basket here at FR.</s>
I am maxed out at a step 10 and won’t be getting any more step increases unless I COMPETE for a HIGHER GRADE.
But, I have had employees work for me who were denied a step-increase because of a less than stellar rating. I just made sure I documented along the road.
Those 737 must have been really, really, really bad.
How many of them received bonuses and then had a Desk-Audit to move to a higher GS Grade?
Let's cool it with the class envy, OK?
Or, worse still, provided honest feedback on the EPIC FAIL of the policies of the current administration. . .
Why is this issue debateable?
In the private sector, There is no such thing as "step increases" or "longevity raises."
Why should the public employees "demand" those? The reward for satisfactorily doing your job, is you get to keep it.
If you can't do satisfactory, you get to look for a new job.
It works in the private sector. If you are worth what you think you are, finding a better job should be a slam dunk.
I can't think of a defensible reason why it should not apply to the public sector as well.
The only reason an employer needs is he can't afford it.
Unhappy with that? Slam the door on your way out and get a higher paying job. Don't forget to pout and throw yourself on the floor and have a hissy fit.
Why do public employees deserve arbitrary raises that their employer, the taxpayer does not?
Belonging to a union full of thugs does not count as a defensible reason.
