Radiation risk nothing like Chernobyl, expert says
The U.S. government may have overreacted in setting an 80-km radius no-go zone for U.S. citizens near the Fukushima No. 1 power plant, an expert on radiation and cancer immunology said Tuesday in Tokyo.
U.S. hematologist Robert Gale, who treated Chernobyl exposure victims in 1986, said the current exclusion zone by the Japanese government that covers a 20-km radius around the plant is already "conservative."
"There is no solid reason for the U.S. government to suggest a wider evacuation," considering the current level of microsieverts detected in the region, he said.
Gale was one of the few doctors from the West who took part in the rescue mission at the 1986 Chernobyl incident, where he flew to Moscow and treated firefighters who were exposed to high levels of radiation.
He has taken part in medical rescue efforts after the 1999 nuclear chain reaction accident in Tokaimura, Ibaraki Prefecture, and Brazil's Goiania nuclear incident in 1987.

Thw U.S. “may have” - but let’s see some indication that the Japanese are finally getting their s**t together before jumping to conclusions.
Can't believe we just loaned billions to Brazil to "explore". IIRC, we've forgiven loans to that Communist country before.
I’m hopeful things will turn out better than they seem, but it’s hard to avoid panic in the wake of such disaster. I’m not convinced the Japanese press will be totally honest about what’s going on either. It may be awhile before we hear the full story.

Unless you want to count the agenda/reason of this administration inclusive of anti nuclear.
For how many days did Japan understate the danger there? I think the US can make up whatever mind they want to.
Soon the EPA will issue a mandatory evacuation of planet earth. lol
The US government is allowed to be just as emotional and non pragmatic, biased and ideological, following the latest fads and reacting to media hype as others. I have come to expect no less of our government where we also have the foresight to make CO2 a hazardous chemical.
When our government acts this way, they actually loose on credibility, waste money and add to the hype and feeding frenzy out there. Instead of “leading” they are “following fads” i.e. global warming, acid rain, baby seals, DDT, paper recycling, CFCs...... True leadership and good stewardship of tax dollars as well as acting in our nations best economic and national security interests are accomplished when our government has knee jerk reactions based on prevailing moods and feelings, generated by media hype and sensationalism as well as ignorance and a fear of the unknown. Why base a decision on lousy facts?
