Bystanders severely beat a driver who accidentally hit a man running from a mobile home park near Henderson where large fights broke out Saturday night, state troopers said Sunday.
Troopers said the driver, who didn't want his name released out of concerns for his safety, was driving down Raleigh Road in Kittrell to get his son a late-night snack from Burger King around 9:15 p.m. Several large fights were taking place in a nearby mobile home park, troopers said.
Reuben Wright, 19, of Henderson, ran out into the road in front of the car, and the driver had no time to see him or stop, troopers said. Wright's head crashed through the front windshield.
Troopers said bystanders from both sides of the road rushed out into the street, dragged the driver from his car and assaulted him, nearly beating him to death.
He has been released from Mariah Parham Medical Center, but his lung is still in danger of collapsing.
"The driver had cuts and bruises all over his head, all over his back," said Trooper B.E. Pulliam of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Wright was flown to Duke University Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition Sunday evening. He suffered serious head trauma and fractures in both his legs, according to Wright's friends.
Cindy Harris, of Kittrell, watched the attack and stopped to help the victim. She said she flashed her lights and held her horn down for five minutes to get the crowd to scatter.
"I'm very angry," she said. "It was just a brutal, brutal beating."
She described how they pulled him from the car, and said four or five people kicked him repeatedly while one man sat on him and pushed his head into the cement.

Geeez, what 3rd world country did this happen in?? Oh...nevermind...
Don’t go driving without at least one firearm and a few extra mags with you.
9:15 is now late night.
I guess if it’s dark, it’s a war zone in that community?
You know you’re a redneck when. . . .
He says this like it's a normal thing.
The video is worth watching. I don’t think these were rednecks.
I’m just going to take a wild guess and say that either race or drugs was also at issue.
Yeah, that struck me too. There are parts of this country where I guess normal people just need to stay away. And it seems that those areas are growing.
You gotta PAY for our frien's stupidity. Ain't nobody 'llowed to beat on him but US!
Obama voters according to comments at the article link.
They'll grow until they get to a certain point. Then they'll encounter something else that's growing.
Was the driver beaten by diversity?
What WRAL fails to report is part two to this story: Part two is that the wife of the driver of the car that struck the pedestrian was beaten at MPMC ER when she attempted to apologize to the family of the man that was struck by the vehicle. She was jumped and beaten just like her husband. Sad,sad,sad.....here was a lady that was attempting to apologize for something that obviously wasnt her husbands fault and she gets jumped by a mob of angry family members and friends. So before you go and say that I dont know what I am talking about, I witnessed this first hand at the ER over at MPMC as I was in the waiting room waiting for my mother in law to be seen. I feel sorry for the family of the man that struck the pedestrian. His family could have been destroyed right there in one night in less than an hour by a bunch of people who obviously have no common sense, decency or raising. Only in Vance Co....Only in Vance County.
fed up in vance
Those trailer parks contain mostly all black tennants with maybe a couyple of Hispanics. It did not happen in Kitrell according to the map on WRAL. It's just outside the Henderson city limits. My neighbor works at the hospital and another fight broke out between the drunk friends of the drunk that caused the accident and the family of the unfortunate driver on his way to Burger King. Unfortunately, the daughter of the driver of the car was also badly beaten by an angry mob of drunk animals. It's a shame that the story comes out without all the facts. Maybe WRAL will print some factual information as to what the authorities did to the drunk mob of savages. I'd like to see the pinhead that caused this whole riot be held responsible. Im sure that's unlikely, since the local cops mostly have the job of "keeping score" in these incidents and not showing up in time to prevent them. 2 beaten,1 car crashed,1 drunk hit by car,10 people jump on 1 innocent white guy,etc......
el conquistador
I now see that this story is off the main page for WRAL which appears to be an attempt to sweep it under the rug. Now, the driver that was beat is MY SON! I want to thank everyone for their comments and concerns. I saw him last night and he is not a pretty sight. Eyes blackened, arms scrapped and "boot" marks on his back. He could hardley get out of his chair to greet me! One thing that has not been mentioned is that who ever represtented security in the hospital, when they kept my Granddaughter from being hit any more, they told the person doing the assulting that she needed to calm down because he did not want to arrest her and he thought the whole situation was "funny"! Please keep my son and his family in your prayers and hopefully justice will be served here but we will have to wait and see.

As of right now, there are 6 pages of comments on the article.
Yes, It's what gave them strength.
Yes.
After watching the video, my first (no doubt ‘racist’) thoughts RE: the perpetrators appear to have been confirmed.
When they fail to note the race of the attackers and of the victim, you can pretty much figure it out.
It worries me that factions of our country are becoming more and more like wild animals, but due to political correctness, cannot be hunted down and dealt with like the wild animals that they are.
Bullshit, Bruce.
More like, "You Be Gangsta when..."
Yes, the comments are worth reading, since it appears the media is leaving a few things out of their reporting. Whatever happened to hard hitting investigative reporters ready to break a story wide open?
