BATON ROUGE, La. — A Houma area state senator Monday became the Louisiana Legislature's newest party switcher to the Republicans.

Sen. Norby Chabert, a first-term senator from Little Caillou, announced that he has moved from the Democratic Party to the GOP.

The member of a longtime Democratic political family, Chabert holds the Senate seat once held by his father Leonard and brother Marty. He's the fourth Democrat in the Senate to switch parties in the last five months, as the fall elections near and the state continues a trend to the right.

Chabert said the national Democratic Party and President Barack Obama are out of step with Louisiana businesses, residents and philosophies. He cited the Obama administration's response to the Gulf oil spill and the now-lifted moratorium on deepwater drilling among his reasons. He had supported Obama for president.

"My decision today was one of the toughest I have ever had to make politically. But as I look back over the past months, I see an administration and a national party clearly out of touch," Chabert said in a statement.

Both the House and Senate chambers are majority GOP after a recent series of party switches and elections that reshuffled the ranks. The Senate now has 22 Republicans and 17 Democrats.

Chabert represents parts of Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes.

Wouldn’t he have made a bigger statement by staying a lefty and voting Repub? Then when the press asked why he voted the way he did, he could use his “I’m not happy with the direction my party is going” respons. Instead the Repub’s have another RINO.

Are there any Democrats left in Louisiana? It seems like all these “jumped parties” I’ve seen lately are there.

Like in Mississippi, there is no place for a white conservative in the Louisiana Democrat party.
I think there is a purge of white conservatives from the Democrat party in the entire southeast.

“Instead the Repub’s have another RINO.”

Bingo! Some don’t seem to understand that this is bad news. They’ll vote with the Democrats. This is nothing but a move for re-election.

Conservative Democrats in the South are jumping ship.

For that you can thank Obama.

Its hard to believe LA was solidly Democratic four years ago. Now the only statewide elected Democratic official left is Mary “Baby Cheeks” Landrieu.

LA will become even more Red in November.

I agree and think the GOP there ought to field as strong a candidate against him as is possible. In the interim he should be closely watched and if he fails to vote in the best interests of the party he should be asked to step down or otherwise marginalized.

The GOP should require some type of internal vote before letting a Pol claim they are Republican. I am extremely leery of these people after the Congress we got in 2004, we never want that repeated again.
