Radiation 1,600 times higher than normal levels has been detected in an area about 20 kilometers from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, International Atomic Energy Agency officials said Monday.

Don't mean to sound alarmist, but 161 microsievert per hour 20 Km away?

Please, some of you nuke engineer guys chime in here.

That’s extremely high at 10 miles. Was it a local reading or a reading around the area? Measurement fluke? Lousy reporting?

It's going to be high. High enough to hurt? No clue. Every single journalist with a Geiger counter is out there mapping it, so it's overshadowing the 18000 souls lost at last count.

This sounds really off. Unless someone is carrying around radioactive chunks and dropping them... I just don’t see how.

Just wondering about the nuclear tests in the Nevada desert pre WWII and the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima. We are here and alive.

I predicted major fallout as soon as the first core melted down.

They are not evacuating a large enough area, but I can see why. Where would a million people go? Housing has always been extremely tight in Japan.

They will all just have to wait 20 or 30 years to see if they get cancer. :(

Well, they did evacuate all persons within a 20 km radius of the plant in the first day or two after the event, didn’t they?

I have the same questions; this was an IAEA team per Kyodo News, so I hope the team confirmed before reporting, and Kyodo News fact checked it.

About the same as an airport x-ray?

So the problem is a million billion times worse than we ever expected. Got it!

Seeing smoke rising from reactor number 2 is not a good thing. If containment has been even partially lost to that reactor, it is a very bad thing. Reactor 2 is the only one fueled by MOX fuel, which uses plutonium salvaged from obsolete warheads combined with the usual uranium. IF Number 2 goes into meltdown, it will not only create much higher temps (due to the MOX fuel), but will also spew more dangerous raioactive isotopes into the atmosphere than the other reactors or spent fuel rod pools.

Today they evacuated because of #2 smoking. Not good.

According to the chart on the thread I referenced, in post #11, it's about equal to 1 mammogram/day.

So...that’d be like eating 60 tsp of peanut butter, or smoking 3 cigarettes? Or one tenth of the radiation you’d get on an international flight?

I'm trying to get this into some medical dose perspective so I can understand it better, This is about 1.5 head CTs worth of radiation per 24 hours. Seems high to be this long out from the most acute publicized leak and 20 Km away.

Just when you think it’s stabilized it gets much worse.

Those numbers seem too high at 20 klicks, need confirmation on that imo.

Incorrect. Reactor 3 has the MOX fuel.
