I predicted major fallout as soon as the first core melted down.

They are not evacuating a large enough area, but I can see why. Where would a million people go? Housing has always been extremely tight in Japan.

They will all just have to wait 20 or 30 years to see if they get cancer. :(

Seeing smoke rising from reactor number 2 is not a good thing. If containment has been even partially lost to that reactor, it is a very bad thing. Reactor 2 is the only one fueled by MOX fuel, which uses plutonium salvaged from obsolete warheads combined with the usual uranium. IF Number 2 goes into meltdown, it will not only create much higher temps (due to the MOX fuel), but will also spew more dangerous raioactive isotopes into the atmosphere than the other reactors or spent fuel rod pools.

Today they evacuated because of #2 smoking. Not good.

Right. Most of the population immediately around the plant is older and poor, and like you said, where can they go right now anyway, either short or longer-term.

Wonder how this 20 Km would have played out near Tokyo?
