(CBS News) WASHINGTON - South of El Paso on Mexico's side of the border lies Juarez - the most dangerous city in the world. CBS News investigative correspondent Sharyl Attkisson reports ATF Special Agent Rene Jaquez has been stationed there for the past year trying to keep U.S. guns from being trafficked into Mexico.
"That's what we do as an agency," Jaquez said. "ATF's primary mission is to make sure that we curtail gun trafficking."
That's why Jaquez tells CBS News he was so alarmed to hear his own agency may have done the opposite: encouraged U.S. gun dealers to sell to suspected traffickers for Mexico's drug cartels. Apparently, ATF hoped that letting weapons "walk" onto the street - to see where they'd end up - would help them take down a cartel.

But ATF wasn't working alone on the case known as "Fast and Furious." Documents show ATF had conference calls with DHS (Homeland Security,) "USMS" (U.S. Marshals,) and DEA. An "ICE" or Customs agent was on ATF's Fast and Furious team. They were advised by an "AUSA" or Assistant U.S. Attorney under the Justice Department.

Heads need to roll for this!
Disband the ATF!
What did he know and when did he know it?
Note: The agent does not say "illegal" gun trafficking. Paging Senator Grassley. Please pick up the white courtesy phone.

A false flag op. to strip Americans of their 2nd amendment rights has blown up in their faces!
FUBO!
Well, it depends upon what the goal of this action was.
If it was to follow guns and bust the gun runners, they failed.
If it was to add some artificial credence to their asinine assertion that the drug cartels got 90% of their guns from the U.S., they failed. It just took a while for the truth to out. Amazing this is from CBS.
“Disband the ATF!”
And the DHS and the DEA and the ......
After all, running with a gun, just like running with scissors, is dangerous.
Really now! Is anyone genuinely surprised?
Their counterparts on the Mexico side are aiding the cartels in moving the drugs.
Its called job security, you want to make director you need more staff and resources under you.
For anyone who knows...do cartridges fired from an AK-47 display a distinctive impression that can be traced back to the firing gun? Like a pistol?
The word came down from the top. What did Obama know and when did he know it.
Why don’t police departments in all the major cities sell guns undercover to suspected traffickers to find out where the guns walk? That way they can get all the guns off the street once someone has been murdered!!! What a terrific idea!!!!
I bet they’ve done this with drugs as well.
Mods,
Why was this removed from Breaking News?
If collusion among govt departments in illegal acts does not count as Breaking News, then what does?
And this just came out today.
This VILE Admin makes the Clintons look like pikers. Evil to the core!

Some days I think the entire federal government is a corrupt cesspool. Other days I am sure.
to answer your question, to a degree, yes. A case fired from a gun leaves a “fingerprint” allowing a match to be attained. However, unlike real fingerprints, the more a gun is used, the more the chamber, firing pin impression and rifling change.
This means that the first bullet fired from a gun will have different markings due to wear than say the 500th or 5000th round. The cases will bear different markings as well.
If the barrel is lapped, the markings on the lands and grooves will show a different pattern than before the lapping.
Firearms forensics is a fickle science depending upon the suspect weapon having not been modified or shot all to hell before recovery.
