Libya: the West and al-Qaeda on the same side
The Telegraph (UK) ^ | March 18, 2011 | Richard Spencer

Statements of support for Libya's revolution by al-Qaeda and leading Islamists have led to fears that military action by the West might be playing into the hands of its ideological enemies.

WikiLeaks cables, independent analysts and reporters have all identified supporters of Islamist causes among the opposition to Col Gaddafi's regime, particularly in the towns of Benghazi and Dernah.

An al-Qaeda leader of Libyan origin, Abu Yahya al-Libi, released a statement backing the insurrection a week ago, while Yusuf Qaradawi, the Qatar-based, Muslim Brotherhood-linked theologian issued a fatwa authorising Col Gaddafi's military entourage to assassinate him.

let herself get bullied by Sarkozy into attacking Libya on behalf of Al Qaeda.

Maybe the other way around?

She HATES Israel. She's FOR the PLO. She's trying to get Al Jazeera on our cable networks.

She's been hitched at the hip with a born and raised Palestinian Muslim since her first days in the WH -

I suspicion if there any 'bullying' - it's SHE, the bull in the china shop, that's doing it.

Remember this IS the French, whose susceptibility to self-delusions of grandeur are well documented.

Certainly can't argue with that, but for Hillary to fall for it?

Nah, sumthin else is going on.....this is going to get interesting as it unfolds.

Hillary tends to get too much credit. She’s really not that smart.

the Obama Administration cannot be allowed to cover-up its grotesque miscalculation in attacking Libya on behalf of Al Qaeda.

I am not so sure that it is a miscalculation on Obama's part. He may know that he is helping Al Qaeda

I have been rooting for Qadaffi from the beginning. You would be surprised at the anount of flak that has come my way from people who should no better. I concur with your analysis. I had reached the same comclusion myself. Obama just grifted Europe and the entire USA.But note that 74% of Americans do not approve of what Obama is doing in Libya.

I hope Qadaffi prevails. He has a lot of support here in America.Simply because he kills Muslim Brotherhood and Al Qaeda where he finds them.

I don’t like Qadaffi at all, but I agree with you. He’s the lesser evil here. He’s also someone who can be manipulated, as was proven when Reagan parked that bomb in his living room.

Excellent analysis. The other aspect of this that makes me uneasy (and could bite us in the ass later) is the fact that Gaddafi made peace with us and gave up his nukes. Our reward for him is to bomb his residence and try to overthrow him. Note that Kim Jong-Il and Ahmedinejad are still sitting pretty. Dictators everywhere are going to figure out that nuclear programs buy deterrence, whereas the termination of nuclear programs buys Western attack.

That aside, I used to think Uncle Sam's word meant something - if we make peace with someone, we let bygones be bygones. We don't do that "unequal treaty" crap that the Chinese (of all ideological persuasions) use to abrogate treaties they don't like, such as they did when they took back Hong Kong and Macau at gunpoint, and attacked Vietnam, India and the Soviet Union over boundary issues previously settled by treaty. But now, out of the blue, we get something like this over Gaddafi - he gives up his nukes and makes peace, and we give him the shaft. It's a travesty.

[. . .this “revolution” in Libya appears to be much different than the ones in Tunisia and Egypt. . .]

Early on the “rebels” focused on seizing and defending hubs of the oil infrastructure. I wondered at one point if they might be sponsored by someone in Oklahoma.

Q-duffy may be a socialist bastard but he is much better than any ‘democratic’ alternative there.
