Democrats want Congress to sign off on Libya attack
By: John Bresnahan and Jonathan Allen March 19, 2011 04:27 PM EDT
Even as American warships have begun bombing military targets inside Libya, several leading House Democrats are pushing for President Barack Obama to seek congressional approval to allow U.S. forces to help enforce a no-fly zone over Libya.
Rep. John Larson (Conn.), chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, is setting up a conference call with members this afternoon to discuss U.S. involvement in Libya. Larson is one of those Democrats who want Obama to get congressional approval for American involvement in the effort.
Other Democrats with the same view as Larson are Reps. Jerrold Nadler (N.Y.) and Dennis Kucinich (Ohio). On the Senate side, Sen. Richard Lugar (Ind.), top Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee, has called on Obama to seek congressional sign-off on the Libyan operation.
Larson is putting the call together so that rank-and-file lawmakers can get more information from Democrats who were at the White House on Friday to be briefed about U.S. involvement in the Libyan campaign. American warships began missile attacks on Libyan air-defense units on Saturday as part of Operation Odyssey Dawn, according to media reports.
Its an update for members, Larson spokesman Ellis Brachman said.
But todays Democratic Caucus call may also turn into a debate over whether Democrats should push the president to seek congressional approval for U.S. involvement in Libya under the War Powers Act. Larson himself believes the president has a responsibility to do so. Several House Republicans, including Rep. Ron Paul (Texas), have challenged the White House on the same issue in the past.

These Democrats seemed to be confused about how fascism actually works. Congressional approval? Now that's funny.
BUSH HAD CONGRESSIONAL APPROVAL BEFORE ATTACKING IRAQ!!!!!!
This makes Obama even more of a “cowboy” and “war criminal” and it makes Libya an “illegal war”!
Good luck with that. Zero needs a little war to make it seems like he has a pair. He isn’t going to let Congress cancel his chance to be a man.
They all suck. Pardon my bluntness.
Gaddafi was buddy with some of the more Stalinist wannabe leftist groups in Europe, getting rid of him would be one hell of a black eye to a lot of fringe groups in the West out to bring in these kinds of power hungry individuals in our lives.
And frankly I honestly believe it is in God’s hands anyway.I feel sorry for the poor ****** running Libya because he is going down.
If they press for it, approve it on the condition that 150 billion be cut from the budget until the end of the fiscal year.
If there is a vote the dems will all vote for whatever obama wants to do. A republican president needs approval from congress. A dem president needs a rubber stamp YES vote.
Maybe his brackets were way off and he needed to change to major international affairs.

Coal is an enemy. Offshore oil is another enemy. With the Japanese nuclear meltdown, I’m just waiting for moratorium on US nuclear facilities.
I’m sure someone will blame President Bush for the whole deal.
Smart move on their part, they know several republicans will end their career due to this vote. Any one that votes for damn sure will never get my vote.
Let’s just impeach the bassturd...
What’s the rush? BO need a fig leaf? The GOP should debate it at least as long as the Dems did Pres. Bush’s move into Iraq.
Dammit! All war is messed up. There is no GOD and we love everybody. Gosh, you people are so stupidly naive, it makes me sick!
It is hard to comprehend the Bolshecrats have strong feelings about anything that does not rob Peter. Given the uniquely bobble head unison of message, you won’t find anyone not toeing the party line.
Aren’t you supposed to bet approval BEFORE you attack? (I mean, if you are a Republican president.)
