Chicago - Fears of nuclear radiation in Japan have now hit Chicago, after a plane landing at O'Hare Airport tested for positive for radiation, but an expert in the field cautioned that there was no risk to the public from the incident.

A spokeperson for American Airlines confirmed that two planes from Tokyo tested positive for radiation Wednesday, one at O'Hare and one landing in Dallas.

The radiation at O'Hare was coming from a routine medical shipment that was bound for Mexico.

U.S. Customs said the radiation test was positive, but at no time was the radiation at unsafe levels.

The scan lasted about 15 minutes and no passengers were detained.

This should be removed from ‘Breaking News’ and re-categorized in ‘Broken News’.

How in the world did they know the radiation was from Japan? Does Japanese radiation have unique physical or radiological traits?

I will let those of you with a better developed sense of humor write your own jokes.

I’m guessing at least half the people out there panic-buying iodide tablets have granite countertops in their kitchens....

Hmmm...

Was it “as much radition as one would receive from a trans-Pacific airline flight”?

I visited a nuclear facility years ago, on the way out my wristwatch set off a wand. That stuff they put on the numbers to glow in the dark has a minute amount of rad in it.

Today is the first day that it’s been reported, so it wasn’t happening in the last 5 days? Not abnormal amounts, not plutonium? Again we just don’t know.

In other news, White House Spokesman Jay Carney today stated that, in a stunning reversal, radiation is NOT harmful to human beings. In fact, it’s good for you.

When will they test for radiation amounts from their scanners ? Why not test all planes so they have something to compare to ? Idiots on parade .

OMG! We installed granite in our kitchen 3 years ago! We're going to die! Oh wait...right...I'm going to die anyway. I forget sometimes.

To help solve the problem of radiation coming to CONTUS, Barry will probably just issue an executive order that all "green" wind turbines face west.

Just curious, any indication of what the radiation level was as compared to the normal radiation levels commonly received on airliners flying at 35,000 feet or so?

The title says "planes," the plural, and the article says it was one plane and it was from medical equipment.

Nope, not fishy. Just typical drive-by journolister product designed to stir emotions.

We were in NM visiting relatives, their local paper was in an uproar because radioactive material was detected in a garbage truck leaving Los Alamos.

After digging through the whole thing, they found... cat litter. Backtracking, they found a woman with a cat who’d had a radiation treatment who subsequently, as cats will, peed in its litter box, which she threw away normally.

Those are some sensitive sensors!

That stuff they put on the numbers to glow in the dark has a minute amount of rad in it.

That used to kill watch makers. They'd use a very fine brush to paint the liquid on the numbers and tended to lick the brush to bring it to a point in between numbers. The stuff in there was radium.
