Breaking : Obama seeks safety review of US nuclear plants

Posted on 03/17/2011 1:23:41 PM PDT by Scythian

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is calling for a comprehensive safety review at the 104 nuclear reactors in the U.S. in the wake of the Japanese disaster.

The president is asking the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to examine nuclear plants to ensure they can withstand earthquakes and other disasters. Obama said lessons can be learned from the unfolding nuclear disaster caused by last week's earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

In televised remarks Thursday, The president said U.S. officials do not expect harmful levels of radiation to reach the West Coast of the continental U.S., Hawaii or Alaska. He repeated the statement for emphasis.

C’mon. Just because he desires to “make energy costs necessarily skyrocket” and crush the imperialist monster that we call home doesn’t mean he’s going use this to his advantage. As much as he despises our country, our way of life and everything we stand for, I can’t believe he’s doing anything but looking out for our best interests here.

And besides, it’s only 20% of our energy supply. No big thing.

I was thirty miles downwind from Three Mile Island. You laugh, but do you have any idea how hard it is to find a pair of earmuffs that fit over both of my heads?

Walk a mile in my six shoes before you crack jokes.

This is knee jerk, and if Barry goes ‘Merkel’ and REMOVES 20% of the US grid supply...welcome to the 1800s.

We ought to start playing their cynical, control-freak game against them.

One of the Left's goals is to get us out of cars and into their reparations-run "public transportation" system, choo-choo-trains to nowhere being their favorite.

Next time there is a passenger train calamity, we should scream from the rooftops that public transportation is just to risky and we need to get rid of it, for the children.

It sounds stupid, but twenty years ago so did gay marriage and 35% of the country being on welfare.

Finally he is doing something.

No he is not.

This is a purely for public consumption waste of time and money like everything this shadow puppet does.

And how exactly does the NRC perform a “comprehensive safety review at the 104 nuclear reactors in the U.S.”?

And let’s not mention that every nuclear power plant in the US has already had a comprehensive safety review before they ever produced their first megawatt.

Unless they have suddenly found some new laws of motion I don’t see any value in reevaluating existing plants.

More than likely is again bowing to one of his far left environmentalist lobbies.

Well, Arizona does sit on top of the Napolitano Fault, which seems to slip up a lot. :-))

The Regime needs to outlaw cars. Too many people die in car accidents. They are unsafe. Buses too...look at the accident in Brooklyn over the weekend. Too risky.

The nanny state must stop. The pandering, at high co$t to the US taxpayers (useless, redundant studies like this one BHO just ordered) must stop.

The nuclear plants are under constant licensing review from the NRC. This is all smoke (ooh noes, carbon!) And mirrors (risk of broken glass).

“...but I’d bet anything the goal is to find an excuse to shut them down.”

Agreed. He doesn’t hesitate to rush into doing things that are bad for America.

If something is truly in our best interests, Obama will dawdle, drag his feet, make excuses, and finally get around to procrasinating.

Amen. My fear...Barky goes Merkel...shuts them down (for the chillrens’ safety) and we at best have rolling blackouts; at worst...hello 1820s.

Rolling blackouts doesn’t bode well for Baraq’s re-election chances. So I doubt we’ll see that plan anytime soon.

So, I’d call that an unsuitable emergency deployment plan and faulty design.

but anyone in this forum who wants to be taken seriously regarding the future of nuclear power would expect no less than a thorough review of safety systems and procedures.

I might if the Japanese plants had performed in some unexpected way.

However there is no evidence at this time that the plants performed in any other way than as they were designed. It is probably too early to make that judgment.

The problem as far as can be judged at the present time seems to be that the plants were designed on faulty assumptions of how large a Tsunami could hit the plants.

The plants were hit by an earthquake larger than they were designed for but they still performed well. But the Tsunami that hit them was taller than the seawall meant to protect the plants

There is nothing in the events in Japan to suggest that US plants are not prepared for what nature can reasonably be expect to throw against them.

Ordinarily I would agree. But this can all be ‘spun’ as saving the US from the fate of Japan. And if I had not read (even here on FR) the hysteria of the past week. How many times did the “750 rads plume map” have to be deleted over the weekend here? The alphabet lame stream media have been hyperventilating; that has an effect...especially on those who voted for the Messiah the first time round.

No he is a Saudi stooge but loads of idiots here think the Saudis are our friends.

You could stand to learn a thing or two about energy racketeering.

Well, I guess you'll be surprised that at least one West coast plant in the US was built to sustain a 7.1 quake and no tsunami and a plant in New York, 21 miles or so from the city is at the most at risk. Heh man.....I'll have power if they shut the plants down......your mileage may vary. Engineers design for worst case scenarios......some times those scenarios are exceeded.

Entirely appropriate course of action.

Yeah, like we're going to have 9.0 earthquakes and massive tsunamis in states from New Hampshire to Florida, nearly all of which have nuclear power plants. Oh, we especially gotta watch out for those tsunamis in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, Ohio, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Nebraska, Kansas, and Arizona dontcha know.

Taking a break now to roll my eyes and laugh uproariously.

"... There is nothing in the events in Japan to suggest that US plants are not prepared for what nature can reasonably be expect to throw against them."

And, because of the worldwide focus on Japan's nuclear meltdown calamity that's captured the rapt attention of the planet, the President has ordered the NRC inspectors to prove US plant's emergency preparation.

Or, what would you do if you were President in this situation? Go on TV while chewing bubble gum and dismissively waving your hand at the cameras saying "Ah, that's the Japs. Never happen here."

Because that's exactly the cavalier attitude we're seeing in this thread. I surely hope that the actual field engineers at our US power plants haven't got the attitude of their staunchest supporters on FR, and I'd imagine that they certainly do not. Probably they even actively seek to get rid of recklessly self-assured personalities like that.

in Arizona or upstate New York?

Some people will kneejerk (and My GOD have they already) that there’s no problem and there just can’t be anywhere.

And if hussein says anything about safety, that’ll REALLY piss them off. I agree with you, this is one of the most reasonable things he’s done so far.
