Libya: Gaddafi confident of 'finishing the job' in 48 hours

The Gaddafi regime yesterday taunted the West over its failure to impose a no–fly zone over Libya and said it would "finish the job" of defeating the insurrection against its rule by tomorrow.

As Col Muammar Gaddafi's troops advanced towards Benghazi, the rebel capital, Saif al–Islam, the dictator's son, told "traitors and mercenaries" to flee the country or face the consequences.

"We don't want to kill, we don't want revenge, but you, traitors, mercenaries, you have committed crimes against the Libyan people," he said, in an interview. "Leave; go in peace to Egypt."

Asked about continuing British and French attempts to persuade the UN to impose a no–fly zone, he answered: "Military operations are over. Within 48 hours everything will be finished. Our forces are almost in Benghazi. Whatever the decision, it will be too late."

The failure on Tuesday by the G8 group of nations to agree military intervention in Libya is said to have "perplexed" Downing Street. An immediate decision was opposed by China and Russia but even America failed to support the idea.

At Prime Minister's Questions, David Cameron called on the UN Security Council to "show some leadership" over Libya. He told MPs: "Every world leader has said that Gaddafi should go, that his regime is illegitimate and if at the end of this he is in place that will send a terrible message not just to people in Libya but to others across the region."

The White House is said to be exploring "other options", such as using sequestered Libyan assets to fund the opposition. Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, said she was hopeful the UN would take a vote on a resolution today.

But Bernard Jenkin, a senior Tory MP, said: "Where are the Americans? [President Obama] has been dithering and vacillating,

I'm glad someone's noticing around the world. When Obama called for Gaddafi to be removed, he should've had a plan of action.

Sarkozy and Cameron were ready to go with a no-fly zone.

Obama's gone golfing, filmed his NCAA brackets for ESPN, had parties with entertainers, athletes and the all important 2012 fundraising pitch.

It's so bad CBS' Chip Reid asked the White House about its inability to make a decision on Libya earlier this week.

Obama will be morally culpable for calling for Gaddafi's removal while standing by and doing nothing. It's contemptible.

While I vehemently support NOT spilling American blood and treasure down yet another muslim rathole, it would`ve been great for 0bama to STFU about it in the early going. He thought he was on the winning side, but it turns out once again, he was acting stupidly.

I think we should give 0bama a little credit here. It’s not easy playing golf while sitting on a fence.

After his victory in Libya, conquering Colonel Q-Daffy should push across the border into Egypt and capture all those US supplied weapons, then take Italy, France, Germany and burn Brussels....Free the citizens from the clutches of the EUSSR!

You forgot to mention that he’s been in office for only 27
months. We need to give him more time before we begin to criticize.

The White House is said to be exploring "other options", such as using sequestered Libyan assets to fund the opposition trying a couple of the golf courses in Scotland for a change.
