San Jose: Chief says cops shouldn't be involved in immigration enforcement

As some states like Utah look to put cops on the front lines of immigration enforcement, San Jose Police Chief Chris Moore and other prominent law enforcement officials warned Wednesday that using their shrinking pool of officers to target illegal immigrants is inefficient, costly and would make their cities more dangerous, not less.

"I am looking at laying off 300 officers, so now more than ever I need to focus on partnerships with communities,'' Moore said during a national teleconference sponsored by the Police Executive Research Forum. "This (the issue of immigration enforcement) has become a wedge in our communities and we need to remove that wedge.''

The teleconference was part of a larger public effort by some high-profile police executives to communicate to political leaders and people that the increasing calls for more aggressive and local immigration enforcement efforts could adversely affect them.

The officials noted, in particular, immigration crackdowns in Arizona and Utah and other proposals that seek to have local law enforcement enforce immigration laws, primarily a federal function. Looking to reassure its own large and growing Latino community, San Jose has long broadcast that it does not participate in immigration raids. And officers are ordered not to investigate someone's immigration status during arrests.

San Jose police are looking to greatly improve its frayed relationship with immigrant communities amid allegations of overaggressive policing and racial profiling. Moore, for example, has in his short tenure as chief discontinued a policy in which cars of unlicensed drivers stopped for minor traffic violations were impounded for a month -- a policy many felt unfairly targeted the undocumented Latino community.

"I was very, very concerned of people being afraid of us,'' said Moore, who has put great stock in community cooperation as a major factor in the city's comparative safety

But they care little about the victims of illegals. We certainly do not want to offend the illegals and their supporters, particularly, those supporters that employ them

San Jose: Chief says cops shouldn't be involved in immigration enforcement

That's fine. Put a bounty on em and let the citizens clean up the mess. It's obvious law enforcement won't do it!

Any cop, anywhere, that won't enforce the law should be fired. Any police chief that instructs his officers not to enforce the law needs to be brought up on dereliction of duty charges.

How much longer, Americans?

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

So the presence of law enforcement is no longer expected to have a deterrent effect. Get the radar units off the street. They instill fear in those given to speeding. Disarm the cops. They install fear in hoplophobes. Seriously, if the chief is concerned about instilling fear, lets get the whole job done. Completely eviscerate the cops, then fire them. We're wasting money on useless cops. That includes the chief. First.

Two groups of people, one for individual liberty and freedom, and the other group for lawlessness and slavery, cannot and will not live together.

Sides are being drawn.

Chief Chris Moore shouldn’t be involved in any law enforcement activity.

Pass a resolution that for every illegal caught by LEOS, their Union gets $25.00 dollars.

Bam.

Problem solved.

If they don’t want to enforce the law they should be fired.

They enforce federal laws all the time.

I think Republicans should pass a law that if a police department arrests an illegal alien and fails to forward information about that arrest to the Justice Department, then any future crime victims of that illegal alien should be able to file federal lawsuits against the police department and the political jurisdiction in which the police department is located. Furthermore, the victim, family, or estate ought to be able to file in the closest federal court to to the victim.

“Sides are being drawn.”

Sides have already been drawn, and they are very well defined. All that is left is for the flag to drop.

That’s how they got the Church to turn in child molesters; once these towns are on the hook for millions, their cops will make the Minutemen look like sissies.

If illegals don't like our laws, they can simply vote against them or the politicians who DO enforce them. Democrat and Republican politicians are apparently deaf, dumb and blind to the invasion of illegals and its effect upon our nation and the millions of jobless citizens here.

Secretary of state checks licenses, voter rolls

Snip: The work is far from done, but Secretary of State Dianna Duran testified during a House committee Tuesday that the review has turned up evidence of foreign nationals obtaining a license, registering to vote and casting ballots.
