NRA to President Obama: The Problem Isn’t Guns, it’s Law Enforcement, Media and the Mental Health System

The heads of the National Rifle Association wrote to President Obama Monday, taking issue with his op-ed in the Sunday Arizona Daily Star, in which he said that since the tragic shooting in Tucson perhaps another 2,000 Americans have been lost to gun violence.

The president pushed for states to provide better data to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System and suggested "an instant, accurate, comprehensive and consistent system for background checks to sellers."

The heads of the NRA responded to the president's op-ed on gun issues, saying, “to focus a national dialogue on guns – and not criminals or mental health issues – misses the point entirely."

The problem is not gun laws, they say, bur rather lax law enforcement, a sensationalist media and deficiencies in the mental health system.

After suggesting that the president's claim to support the Second Amendment is "lip service," NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre and chief lobbyist  Chris Cox urged the president to:

•        "contact every U.S. Attorney and ask them to bring at least 10 cases per month against drug dealers, gang members and other violent felons caught illegally possessing firearms.  By prosecuting these criminals in federal court – rather than state court – strong sentencing guidelines would apply and charges would not be plea-bargained or dismissed, nor would criminals be released after serving only a fraction of their sentences. This simple directive would result in roughly 12,000 violent criminals being taken off the streets every year";

•        immediately end the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and  Explosives' "Fast and Furious" operation, "in which an unknown number of illegal firearm transactions were detected – and then encouraged to fruition by your BATFE, which allegedly decided to let thousands of firearms 'walk' across the border and into the hands of murderous drug cartels." (Read more on the Fast and Furious program HERE.);

•        call on the  media "to refrain from giving deranged criminals minute-by-minute coverage of their heinous acts, which only serves to encourage copycat behavior.  If media outlets won't show a fan running onto the field during a baseball game because they don't want to encourage that behavior by others – surely they can listen to law enforcement experts and refuse to air the photographs, video messages or Facebook postings of madmen and murderers" and

•        "to encourage people to report red flags when they see them.  In the case of Tucson, a man clearly bent on violence was not reported to the proper authorities by those who had good reason to believe he had serious mental problems.  That's not a deficiency in our gun laws, it's a deficiency in our mental health system – and should be treated as such."

Absentee voting wouldn’t be a problem. The voter would acquire the ballot and go to the nearest BOE headquarters to submit the 4473 and upon approval, submit the ballot.

As for the demented in nursing homes, they would have to be able to fill the form out. Staff would no longer be able to fill out such forms as the penalty would be the same as a straw purchase is as it relates to firearms.

Obama isn’t interested in taking violent criminals off the streets - they are a core part of his constituency.

There's a reason elite liberals don't want to follow common sense recommendations like those offered by the NRA.

It's because the reasons liberal elites give for wanting gun control are lies. The NRA is responding to liberal elites as if they were telling the truth. They aren't. It's why the NRA's message isn't working. Liberal elites wouldn't let that message work if God handed it to them on gold tablets.

gilbo_3 to nra..."Shall NOT be infringed" is a no compromise statement...

what 'law enforcement' does that allow beyond keeping predators and nutjobs locked up until they are simply no longer predators or nuts ???

Oh-oh! LaPierre stepped in 'it', big time.

He's telling Eric Holder to put "His People" (Holder is Amish ya know) in Federal Prison.
That's downright racist! (/s)

'Series' this has been a major problem in Chicago and Crook County for over a decade. On (unofficial) orders from 'King' Richie Daley the Crook County States Attorney has refused to turn over to the Feds ANY of these reprobate maggots for prosecution in Federal Court. And why would Daley and the Crook County States Attorney do that? Because these reprobate maggots have relatives that vote. Yep, it's that simple -- VOTES!

And as a result of that SICK thinking, a few months ago TWO Chicago LEOS were executed in broad daylight by a maggot (Amish) who was out on Bail for ----- Attempted Murder and to boot, out on Parole for Burglary. Yeah, you're right, he never should have been out on the streets due to his Parole Violation.

One LEO was a veteran Chicago Cop taking fingerprints of a garage break-in and car burglary. The other LEO was an ex-CHA Policeman who was the Home and Car owner. Both were armed but never had a chance to even go for their weapons. Both were shot in the back of the head.

It's 'Gun Violence' like this that falls directly back on the shoulders of Daley, the Democratic Party, and their policy of coddling and pandering to DANGEROUS FELONS and minorities for ... VOTES! And in every 'urban area' in the USA this scenario plays out every day. Democrat mayors and their Party hand picking Democrat 'judges' (and parole board members) whose only concern is ... VOTES!

So 20,000 more 'common sense gun control' laws would NOT have prevented this assassination of two good people. BUT! 20,000 new 'politicians' who care about VIOLENT CRIMINAL CONTROL might have. Then again, the current Democrat Pols who run these urban cesspools could enforce the laws already on the books. No matter 'whose people' they may turn out to be.

But that policy might be a little too radical. Relatives would get mad and not vote for them again.

We are not so far gone that he would attempt to do that. Maybe next term.
