More than two months after the Tucson shootings, the administration is calling together both the gun lobby and gun safety groups to find common ground. But President Obama has no plans to take the lead in proposing further gun control legislation, aides say, and the nations major gun rights group is snubbing the invitation.
On Tuesday, officials at the Justice Department will meet with gun control advocates in the first of what will be a series of meetings over the next two weeks with people on different sides of the issue, including law enforcement, retailers and manufacturers, to seek agreement on possible legislative or administrative actions.
The effort follows Mr. Obamas call, in a column on Sunday in a Tucson newspaper, to put aside stale policy debates and begin a new discussion on ways to better enforce and strengthen existing laws to keep mentally unstable, violent and criminal people from getting guns.
But the National Rifle Association, for decades the most formidable force against proposals to limit gun sales or ownership, is refusing to join the discussion possibly dooming it from the start, given the lobbys clout with both parties in Congress. Administration officials had indicated they expected that the group would be represented at a meeting, perhaps on Friday.
Why should I or the N.R.A. go sit down with a group of people that have spent a lifetime trying to destroy the Second Amendment in the United States? said Wayne LaPierre, the longtime chief executive of the National Rifle Association.
He named Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who has almost no role in gun-related policies, and Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr.

The NRA are very politically savvy, as this maneuver proves. Nearly any other person or organization would be gaga over the opportunity to sit down with the President of the United States, even if they thought it would hurt their cause.
I supported the NRA during the last election when they endorsed pro-2nd Amendment Democrats.
Now it’s time to see if this strategy pays off. I’ll eat my words if it doesn’t, but I expect to rub it in everyone’s face who claimed that they renounced their membership if many NRA-backed Democrats join the Republicans in putting a stop to this.
Lets face facts, if you are a Democrat (COMMUNIST) at this point in history you are either too ignorant or too evil to tolerate, and I do not hear you.
Well said, great line!
You left off just plain stupid.
"An uncomfortable truth," that. I have said essentially the same thing to a number of people, and it doesn't usually go down well. At this point, I don't care.

Hey, hussein obama, here's a crazy idea. How about you apply that same logic/policy to immigration and border security too? You lying, hypocritical, socialist, SOB.
I don't believe a single {expletive} word that comes out of this guy's mouth. I don't trust the government, period. I particularly don't trust the so-called "liberals" in government who (again, hypocritically) want to infringe on my liberties, my right to keep and bear arms.
No meeting. No patina of legitimacy to whatever f'd up plan to further usurp our rights obama and his cohorts in crime come up with.
The phrase “including law enforcement” really means the heads of public unions.
Good for the NRA - the NRA does something right. They actually recognized a no-win situation (for once)
Why would anyone meet with the Obama Justice Department or Obama to discuss gun laws. Neither makes the law.
That is up to Congress, Or at least it used to be, Obama has already made himself the Supreme Court is he now making himself Congress?
Any update to a “National Background Check”, will allow the Feds to track gun owners.
You WILL be flagged in a PERMANENT DATABASE!
Really, tell the poser to go:
piss up a rope
take a hike
go herd cats
go get a beating from that shelf ass ugly woman your’re married to
I can go on here
“Sorry Mr Holder, but I’ve got to clean all my rifle butt plates that day...... Perhaps later.”
-——he wants to ban all private sales of firearms. -——
Actually, it is much simpler than that. His motivation is to appear to be solving a problem to placate the wackos
Well done, Wayne. Thank you. This ALMOST makes up for the NRA taking credit for what the 2nd Amendment Foundation accomplished in the McDonald Case.
Let the media cover this non-event event attended only by gun control advocates..Right up their alley relevance-wise !
This is the same thing that all conservative polls need to treat the media -
they are the enemy, seeking to destroy freedom in America, why should I meet with them?
Since the left’s agenda is straight from the father of lies,
you should expect the terms they use to be deceptions.
Gun Safety... Reproductive choice... Social justice...
And the more you investigate it, the less “ignorance” is an option for explaining what they are doing...
I equate the whole dialog process that Obama and his minions want to gather for, to the North Koreans and their desire to get everyone to the table so they can show how much of a bully and unbending tyrant the US is...Remember the 6 party talks???
The NRA has everything to lose in talking directly with this administration, and the NRA made the right call...
I hope we only have to suffer the presense of this administration for only another couple of years...
We will be suffering for this congress and administration actions for many generations to come though...We knew that was going to be true...
I have this personal belief that when the day is over, and we are at calm, and reflect upon what we accomplished that day...
We will still have our guns, regardless of what they do or say...I believe everyone needs to make that personal committment, and be prepared to endure the consequenses of not giving them up, for any reason...Regardless of what un-Constitutional law they try to, or pass to take away our right to keep and bear arms...
They are getting desparate, so this renewed effort doesn’t surprise me one bit...
Ping!
