CASTRIES, St. Lucia — A robbery and assault on three gay American tourists at their vacation cottage has St. Lucia officials scrambling to assure visitors that the southern Caribbean island is safe and welcoming for homosexuals.
Tourism Minister Allen Chastanet issued an apology Monday to three men from Atlanta after masked bandits broke into their mountain rental home in Soufriere. One victim said the gunmen made slurs against gays, white people and Americans during the March 2 assault.

They could have received the same treatment from black people in Washington DC for a heck of a lot less money.
So it's only the "gay" part of the attack they decry ... not the "hate whitey" part.
Maybe it's whites, gay or straight, that should stay out of St. Lucia.

I went on vacation there about 5 years ago. I had a wonderful time with my wife! We did hire a taxi driver for the week, he told us exactly where to go and where not to go.

It appears the thugs never used the term gay- it’s in parentheses. Apparently, the victim assumes the attack was an anti-gay hate crime.
They better not rent a place in Riyadh.

The Caribbean islands are a wonderful place to vacation, provided one doesn’t leave one’s high-security, well guarded resort hotel. As for living there, be sure you have bars on your windows, solid doors with heavy locks, and don’t go out at night.

I know the minute my wife and I got off the plane in St. Lucia we announced to the people that we were NOT gay...just so they would leave us alone.
The love that dare not speak it’s name nowadays can’t keep it’s mouth shut... expect repercussions.
Dittos. We were there twice 2004 and 2005. A wonderful people and a beautiful island.
Funny you said that. We took a tour of a cocoa bean plantation while at St Lucia. Part of it was a 3 or 4 mile walk to a waterfall. We had a couple of locals guiding us (about 15-20 tourists) and they were carrying these big huge machetes.
We laugh about it now...we could have all been cut to pieces and left for dead and nobody would have known where to find us...we were that deep in the forest. Good thing the guides were honest.
I used to live in the Caribbean; I know whereof I speak.
I went there and thought it the most apalling hellhole if an overgrown banana plantation I had ever seen. Abject poverty, with otiose tourist enckves set here and there.
