Has the influence of cable news peaked?

That's the conclusion of PEWs Project for Excellence in Journalism. According to their 2011 State of the News Media study all four cable networks saw their prime-time audiences fall in 2010.

MSNBC, Fox, HLN, and CNN lost between 39,000 and 331,000 viewers as cable -- the fourth most popular platform for news -- showed signs of becoming less important.

Fox News lost a whopping 11% of its prime time viewers (234,000 viewers), but that's not even the worst performance of the cablers.

See who lost the most viewers >>

You know what’s wierd? Hannity drove me nutz during the 2010 election, but lately I have like his show. He does seem to surround himself with panels of gorgeous conservative babes, but that’s not the main reason I like his show, he’s gotten better, mellowed out a bit.

Cable news has crossed in to self parody. That’s why shows like Onion News Network just don’t take off - they are parodying a parody, and that just isn’t very compelling entertainment.

Two reasons why Fox is losing viewers... Beck and Bill O’Reilly

I'd say Beck, Hannity and a complete lack of real breaking news coverage.

I can see O’Reilly driving viewers away, but Beck? Perhaps if they’d drop leftist idiots like Shep, Colmes, and Whoraldo, they’d regain some viewers. I watch Cavuto. I watch Beck. I watch the 6 PM news gang. After that, I’m pretty much done.

I’d say Shepard Smith and O’Reilly. I’ve only seen Beck once so I really don’t have an opinion.

I stopped watching the news anywhere in 2006, I am much happier. I can read all I want and not have to put up with the emoting and battling.

People are sick of O’Reilly and Hannity...

O'Reilly is a pompous ass who adores Zero and Hannity reminds me of that small dog who wants everybody to adore him...I can't tell his shows apart...Rove, Morris, Gingrich...rinse and repeat.

I wouldn't blame it all on Beck and O'Reilly. After all, they're only on an hour each? I'd say that it's the format-- constant bickering under the guise of "debate." O'R, Beck, Hannity all put me off for one reason or another. Fox & Friends is so amateur. As the recent events in Japan show, Fox can't compete with other networks on a global basis. They're 2nd rate.

That's why I watch so little of Fox.

But still led the pack by some 400,000 viewers.

It's very unfortunate that you view Beck so negatively.

American public is grossly ignorant of its own history, and on may important issues Beck is the only source of essential information (that should've been provided in high schools). In contrast, O'Riley is a populist. As talented as he is, there has always been enough populists around. He is replaceable in that sense, but Beck is not.

Most people, including many on this forum, don't know what socialism and fascism are, and can't recognize them when fascism looks them in the face. Had more conservatives known the basics that Beck is trying to provide, we would see less socialist propaganda on FR.

Seems like you are blaming one person that provides enlightenment where it is desperately lacking.

Right on about O’Gasbag. Beck is a different story. He’s well-researched and he’s telling people how it really is. That’s a difficult sell. I know there are nights when I pass on Beck because his truth-telling is really a downer. The other reason for the decline in FNC in my opinion is Fox Business new evening lineup. Napolitano and Bolling are great, as are Cavuto and Stossel. Pew ( aptly named) should ad in Fox Business to the FNC numbers. I’ve moved to FB and I imagine so have a lot of others who don’t like O’Reilly or for that matter Greta Van Cistern. Hannity is probably still the best, but he tends to be a shill for the kind of Republicans that I loathe. All of them give Reverend Al too much air time, and they let Morris peddle his monthly book offering.

I find myself watching Fox less and less because the majority of the time it all advertising

My husband could no longer tolerate the "gold" commecials.

We got satellite to watch O'Reilly and got rid of it because of O'Reily. We tired of O'Reilly almost always giving Obama "the benefit of the doubt." (as fair and balanced as Geraldo or Alan Colmes). An overwhelming number of liberal commentators and repulsive RINOs (on contract to Fox) sealed the deal to remove it from our home. We haven't had one day since where we've missed it.

Virtually everything I watch I record on my DVR. That way I skip all ads and can fast forward through what I do not want to watch. I do not understand why more people do not do this. My wife has her DVR and I have mind. Works great.

No doubt - O’Reilly is like that uncle who only gets invited on holidays cause he never stops telling you how much smarter he is than everyone else, and Beck is like Charlie Sheen for right-wingers.

Beck has got a lot of people reading books and learning the history of this great nation...
