Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, Argentina's president, is using her refusal to appoint an ambassador to Britain as demonstration of her hardline on the Falkland Islands, a key plank of her platform for election in October.
Tensions over the sovereignty of the Falklands have increased since British companies began drilling for oil in the region just over a year ago.
Argentina responded last August by abandoning plans to install a new ambassador in London and reports in Buenos Aires now indicate that none will be appointed this year.
Political analysts said the decision suggested that President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner could stoke up popular resentment about Britain's stance on the Falklands to help win crucial votes in the October poll.
The Argentine government has continued to dispute British sovereignty over the archipelago since its 1982 invasion was defeated.
Prof Mark Jones, an expert in Latin American politics at Rice University in Texas, said Mrs Kirchner's government was likely to use "zealous rhetoric" about the Falklands.
"Kirchner will use the Falklands issue to score political points with the electorate as well as to distract public opinion from topics that are potentially damaging for the Government," he said.
Argentina has not had an ambassador in London since Federico Mirre retired in 2008.

The last time this came up Hildabeest said that the Falklanders had to ‘negotiate’ with Argentina. This also begs the question would President Obama allow Her Majesty’s Navy to re-supply on Ascencion Island as President Reagan did? 19 Months and counting.
More people died during the Falklands’ War than there were people living on the island.

The Falklands are too well protected for the Argentinians to take them this time around. The last time, they faced a garrison of about 20 Royal Marines with light arms, now they would be facing 4 Eurofighters, artillery, AAA, naval support, and about 500 troops, probably battle-hardened from tours in Afghanistan, (with many more that could be airlifted in at short notice if tensions were to rise)...
He detests the British. After just finishing his book (Bill Ayers book, actually) “Dreams From My Father” his hate of the British just seeps from parts of it.
If Argentina has a right to seize the Falklands, then the United States has the right to take back Cuba, which was a prize of war from Spain over a century ago.

No, the Scots and Welsh the British relocated to Ireland several hundred years ago want to be part of the UK. The Irish (which are almost a majority, if they are not already in Northern Ireland) want to be part of the Irish Republic.

Brits are handing over Britain to Muslims. Why would they not hand over the Falkland to Argentinians? It's such and embarrassing reminder about the empire and the British greatness.
Maybe about half do. The country used to be 2/3 Protestant and 1/3 Catholic. The Catholic population is now over forty percent, and most of them support unification with The Republic of Ireland. The upcoming decades, and demographics, will decide the issue.
