Is it cowardice? Is it indecisiveness? Or is it clever diplomacy? Depending on who you ask in Washington, you'll get a different explanation for President Barack Obama's silence, to date, on the subject of Libya. Since the uprising began, he has made only one extended comment on the Libyan rebellion, and it was thoroughly anodyne.
He declared surprise! that the US "strongly supports the universal rights of the Libyan people." He said he had "instructed his administration to prepare the full range of options that we have to respond to this crisis." And then he concluded: "The change that is taking place across the region is being driven by the people of the region. This change doesn't represent the work of the United States or any foreign power."
In the next few days, Obama will have to decide whether to enforce a no-fly zone or and this may be the more likely solution to offer food, weapons and political support to the rebels, probably in conjunction not with the UN but with an ad hoc "coalition of the willing", as George W. Bush would have put it. There are heavy costs to saying yes, and heavy costs to saying no. Either way, Obama is about to learn a lesson: because of America's size and military power, the American president does not have the option to remain neutral indefinitely, to let others lead or to offer mere moral encouragement even though those are the policies this president would prefer.

Let the Arabs states declare and keep a no-fly zone.
Why should we do it.
All of those Arab states have planes and aircraft ranging from migs to F-16’s , why should the United States have to do the job for people who hate us to begin with.,
This ought to be good.
Chicken shit forced to make decision that doesn’t involve which obscure holiday to celebrate at the White Hut, or which sports team to honor at the White Hut, or what is on the menu for the next party at the White Hut.
Obama’s relatives in Kenya are on Q-Daffy’s payroll. If Mubarak had done the same thing, he’d still be in power.
Or, since conservatives in the house won’t fund support of radical Libyan Muslims, he will probably play more golf and basketball.
Gaddafi’s a sharpie and Obama is a political naif with a big mouth. We have absolutely no business in Libya, and any commitment of troops or other military resources to this affair would be as big a gaffe as could be committed.
Which, of course, is not to say that Obama won’t s*** the bed. He’s already secured his place in the history books as the worst-ever president in America’s history; the real question is, having hit rock bottom, does he want to start digging through the earth’s core?
A not-so-veiled allusion to President EgObama's propaganda that the other mid-east countries that had "uprisings" were born of "meddling" by Americans and the West. I'm surprised he didn't somehow blame the Tea Party.
Exactly!
Obamas buddies Calypso Louie and Rev. Wright are calling the shots. They are Daffys Buddies too.
To Heck with Libya. If he can find a Jefferson moment then go with it. This Asswipe is more concerned with wasting capital.

Believe me, he has lost everybody.
If Obama gave a speech about the Bush presidency, and called for a reassessment, he could gain huge political points. It's hard to be president. It's hard to know what to do about Libya. Or Iraq or Afghanistan for that matter. Yellowcake? WMD? There are no easy answers. We have debt and deficits, and all kinds of things. Bush had Enron, and the tech stock meltdown. The president really doesn't control all that much.
If Obama called for truly civil discussion, and a true bipartisan approach to our nation's problems, he could become a really significant figure. By convincing the Democrats that the Republicans were not evil, and convincing the Republicans that the Democrats were not insane, he could really achieve something.
But he doesn't have it in him.
My worst fear: The guy running the teleprompter will make the decision!
it’s guaranteed that he’ll send the marines to “the shores of Tripoli” because he heard it in a song somewhere
bttt
He calls more for the people to recognize he is black. Just ask the NYT. The guy is not capable of the nations highest job.
Do we really want Obama to “take action”?
As others in FR have pointed out (including on this thread), let the Arabs and the Europeans do whatever they want. It’s not our business.
Furthermore, there is no way that Obama’s “action” (whatever it would be) would be competent or intelligent or in any way based on America’s best interest.
When you have a fool for a CIC it’s better to use the military as little as possible.
Especially in a place, like Libya, where there are no good guys.
The Anti-American Ruthless Dictator vs. The Anti-American Islamic Hordes.
Who should we support?
Back to the golf course, Barry. Stay out of this one.
